McKillop Wins Title and OW at PSAC Wrestling Championships

3268Three-time All-American Travis McKillop (184 lbs.) added two-time PSAC Champion and PSAC Tournament Outstanding Wrestler to his resume on his way to leading a group of six Mountain Cat wrestlers who placed in the top-six at Saturday's 2015 PSAC Championships in Erie.  As a team, Pitt-Johnstown finished fifth overall and second among the eight NCAA Division II teams in the 12-team tournament.
 
Edinboro (136.5 pts.) won its fifth straight PSAC Championship 18.5 points over second-place Lock Haven (118 pts.)  Mercyhurst was third overall and first among Division II teams with 118.8 points, while Clarion (95 pts.) and Pitt-Johnstown (92 pts.) rounded out the top-five.
 
Along with McKillop, Evan Link (125 lbs.) and D.J. Sims (285 lbs.) both finished second, and Sam Hanau placed third to join McKillop on the All-PSAC Team.  Additionally, John Blankenship finished fifth at 174 lbs., and Tyler Reinhart placed sixth at 165 lbs. for Pitt-Johnstown.
 
McKillop was dominant in all four of his matches on his way to being name the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.  He opened with a 16-0 tech fall at 2:25 over Edinboro's Chris Laird, before pinning Bloomsburg's Casey Glunt in just 29 seconds to advance to the semifinal.  McKillop then downed Dominic Rigous (Clarion), 9-0, to secure a place in the finals.  McKillop finished it off by pinning Lock Haven's Tristan Sponseller at 1:00 to become a two-time PSAC Champion.
 
After an opening round bye, Link pinned Kutztown's Austin Petril at 2:33, then won a 6-3 decision over Mercyhurst's Willie Bohince in the semifinals to reach the title bout. Sean Russell (Edinboro) built a 5-2 lead and defeated Link, 7-3 to claim the championship at 125 lbs.
 
Sims joined Link as a PSAC Runner-up.  Sims pinned Seton Hill's Alex Soutiere at 6:46 in the first round, before winning a pair of decisions over Saul Wilkins (Bloomsburg) and Andy Welton (Mercyhurst) to earn his spot in the finals.  However, Edinboro's William Miller pinned Sims just over two minutes into the championship match.
 
Hanau reached the semifinals with a bye and a 7-5 decision over Seton Hill's Joseph Allesandro, but Brock Zacherl (Clarion) scored a 4-0 win over Hanau sending him into the third-place match.  Hanau responded by climbing out to a 9-0 lead after two periods and scoring a 13-3 major decision over Edinboro's Nate Hagan to place third.
 
Blankenship (174 lbs.) opened with a 6-1, but the suffered a loss to fall into the consolation bracket.  Blankenship the pinned Seton Hill's Luke Shaffer in 47 seconds and defeated Kutztown's Julio Arredondo, 10-4.  A narrow 3-2 loss to Michael Pavasko dropped him to the fifth-place match where he pinned Christopher Matthews at 2:15.
 
Pitt-Johnstown also got a sixth-place finish from Reinhart at 165 lbs.  After an opening round loss, Reinhart bounce back to pin Shippensburg's Grayson Garber in the first period and earn a 15-0 technical fall at 5:56 over Bloomsburg's Matthew Carr.  However, Reinhart lost a tough 5-4 decision in the consolation semifinals, then was pinned by Kutztown's Ryan Krecker in the fifth-place match.
 
Jim Harrison (133 lbs.) and Travis Shaffer (149 lbs.) were both 1-2, while Corey Falleroni (157 lbs.) and Tyler Oliver (197 lbs.) both went 0-2 for the Mountain Cats.

The Mountain Cats travel to Ashland (OH) University on December and to the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis on December 19-20.  Pitt-Johnstown will wrestle its next home match until January 22 when Gannon University visits the Sports Center.
