Roberts, Reinhart Win Titles: Wrestlers 4th at Nat'l. Tourney

3567Nick Roberts (133 lbs.) and Tyler Reinhart (165 lbs.) each won individual national championships, and Travis McKillop (184 lbs.) was a national runner-up for the second time to lead a group of four Pitt-Johnstown All-Americans at the 2016 NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Saturday.  As a team, the Mountain Cats finished in fourth-place with 71.5 points, 18.5 points behind team champion St. Cloud State... Sam Hanau became Pitt-Johnstown's fourth All-American in 2016 by placing sixth at 141 lbs.
 
St. Cloud State (Minn.) team national championship with 90 points.  Notre Dame (Ohio) (82 pts.) was second, while Nebraska-Kearney (78.5 pts.) Pitt-Johnstown (71.5 pts.), and Maryville (MO) (65.5 pts) rounded out the top-four in the 42-team field.
 
In his finals bout against Indianapolis' Nick Crume, Roberts got a takedown midway through the first period and a quick escape to start the second period to go up 3-0.  Crume used a third period escape and a takedown as time expired, but Roberts had the point for riding time and secured the 4-3 decision.
 
3568Roberts won his first two matches to reach the semifinals against two-time National Champion Daniel DeShazer (Nebraska-Kearney), who he defeated earlier this season at the National Duals.  Roberts got a point for unsportsmanlike conduct on DeShazer in the second round and went on to a 2-1 win.  Roberts scored an 8-4 first round decision over San Francisco State's Fern Giron, before reaching the semifinals with a 6-1 decision over McKendree's Naquan Henry.
 
Reinhart took on Nick Fishback (Wisconsin-Parkside) in the finals and made fairly quick work of him.  Reinhart jumped to a 4-0 lead with a takedown and two back points, before Fishback got a reversal to cut it to 4-2.  However, Reinhart escaped and promptly pinned Fishback at 2:41 to seal his title.
 
Reinhart joined Roberts in the nation finals with a takedown in the first overtime to defeat Lake Erie's Matt Van Dermeer, 5-3.  Reinhart (165 lbs.) used a riding time point to hold off Findlay's Alonzo Turner in the opening round.  Reinhart then built a 6-0 lead on top-ranked Clint Porter (St. Cloud State) and went on to hold Porter off, 9-8, to reach the semifinals.
 
3268McKillop, who earned the NCAA's Most Dominant Wrestler in Division II Award at the conclusion of the tournament, reached the finals for a rematch with Notre Dame's 3-time National Champion.  Davis a three-time national champions who has never lost a collegiate match, defeated McKillop for the title at this year's regional tournament.  After two scoreless periods, McKillop escaped to start the third, but Davis took McKillop less than 10 seconds later to go in front 2-1.  Davis rode McKillop out the remainder of the third period and went on to the 3-1 win to clinch his fourth national title.
 
McKillop became the third Mountain Cat to reach the national finals with a 9-5 victory over Fort Hays State's Jon Inman in the semifinals.  McKillop, the second-ranked wrestler at 184 lbs., opened-up up an early lead and went on to shut out Zack Slotten (Colorado-Mesa) to start the tournament, Before coasting into the semifinals with a 13-2 major decision over Montrail Johnson (Wisconsin-Parkside).

After suffering a loss in the quarterfinals at 141 lbs., Sam Hanau battled back.  Hanau opened Saturday's action with a 5-0 decision over Nebraska-Kearney's Keith Surber in consolation quarterfinals, where he fell to Ouachita Baptist's Blake Clevenger, 7-2.  Hanau then fell to Matt Nelson (St. Cloud State) for the second time in the tournament.  This time Nelson scored a 9-0 major decision over Hanau in the fifth-place match.   He started with an 8-0 major decision over Robert Mason (Ashland).  In the quarterfinals, Hanau build a 12-0 first period lead on Nelson, but Nelson battled back to tie it at 15, then got four back points as time expired to defeat Hanau 19-15.  Hanau then pinned Joshua Ailey (Central Oklahoma) at 5:55 in the second round of the consolations to advance to the second day of the tournament.
 
At 157 lbs., Colorado State-Pueblo's returning All-American JaCobi Jones scored a 6-2 first round decision over Devin Austin.  Austin bounced back with an 8-7 decision over DeAndre Johnson (Limestone) in the first round of the quarterfinals and originally got a forfeit win over Maryville's Greg Hegerty in the second round of the consolations to reach Saturday's consolation quarterfinals.  However, that ruling was reversed.  Austin and Maryville's Hegerty wrestled the first match on Saturday and Hegerty came away with a 6-1 win, eliminating Austin.  Hegerty was disqualified after being call for an illegal move earlier in the tournament.  He was later re-admitted to the tournament, forcing Austin to wrestle him on Saturday.
 
Evan Link (125 lbs.), John Blankenship (174 lbs.), Jacob Hart (197 lbs.), and D.J. Sims were eliminated on the first day of the tournament.
 
Link opened the tournament with a 9-2 decision over Lindenwood's Danny Swan, but suffered a 6-3 loss to Ronzel Darling (Wisconsin-Parkside) in the quarterfinals.  In the second round of the consolations, Newman's Dustin Reed got a late takedown to eliminate Link from the tournament with a 4-3 victory.
 
At 197 lbs., returning All-American Jake Cramer (Tiffin) took advantage of 2:10 in riding time to defeat Hart, 6-5 in the opening round.  Hart responded by pinning Paul Wilson (Colorado-Mines) at 4:04 in the first round of the consolations, before being eliminated in the second round of the consolations.  Maryville's Ryan Beltz scored a 16-5 major decision victory.
 
Minnesota State-Mankato's Malcolm Allen defeated Sims, 8-6, sending him to the first round of the consolations, where he shutout Central Oklahoma's Kyle Factor, 5-0.  However, Southwest Missouri State's Cole Wilson eliminated Sims with an 8-3 win in the second round of the consolations.
 
At 174 lbs., Adam Cooling (Minnesota State-Mankato) held off John Blankenship, 3-2, in the first round, before Blankenship was eliminated from the tournament following a 6-3 loss to Western State's Austin Harris in the first round of the consolations.
