
For the first time since 2008-09, there will be a rematch between the same teams in consecutive years when fourth-seeded Pitt-Johnstown takes on second-seeded Gannon University in Saturday's PSAC Tournament Championship Match at 7 p.m. at Gannon's Hammermill Center. The winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Volleyball Championship Tournament.
Pitt-Johnstown, 25-8, earned its spot in the finals with a five-set win over eighth-seeded Edinboro University in Friday's first semifinal match. Led by
Marissa Erminio's match-high 25 kills, the Mountain Cats fell behind 2-sets-1, but rallied with a 25-21 win in the fourth set and a 15-11 victory in the final set. Along with Errminio,
Cambria Wierman finished with 11 kills and 13 digs, and
Kendall Mahony had nine kills and three blocks.
Gannon, which improved to 28-5, advanced to the finals by sweeping sixth-seeded West Chester University 25-20, 26-24, 25-16 in Friday's second semifinal. Ally Smith finished with 13 kills and Kelsey Ansec collected 12 kills to lead the Golden Knights.
Pitt-Johnstown and Gannon met on September 29 in Erie and the Golden Knights came away with a 3-sets-to-1 victory (25-21, 31-29, 21-25, 25-20). Ansec had a match-high 17 kills, while Ashley Kerestes and Smith had 16 and 10 kills, respectively for the Golden Knights. The Mountain Cats were led by Erminio's 11 kills and Wierman's nine kills.
The two teams also met in last year's PSAC Tournament finale and the Golden Knights swept Pitt-Johnstown 27-25, 26-24, and 25-23.
