(2015 Volleyball Championships) Tournament PreviewIn Friday's first semifinal, Edinboro, the top-seed in the PSAC Western Division, will take on East No. 2-Seed Shippensburg at 5 p.m. Pitt-Johnstown will then play West No. 2 Seed Clarion in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's championship match is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
Clarion (20, 15, 15-7 PSAC West) is the No.-two seed in the PSAC West. The Golden Eagles earned their spot in the semifinals with a 3-sets-to-none sweep over Gannon on Tuesday. Clarion is led by All-PSAC West selections Taylor Braunagel (3.26 kills per set) and Gabrielle Olson (2.49 kills per set), and Marissa Robertson (2.72 kills per set).
Edinboro, the No. 1-seed in the PSAC Western Division, enters this Friday's matchup with Shippensburg with a 31-5 overall record and an 18-4 mark in the PSAC. Edinboro, ranked third in the Atlantic Region, makes its first PSAC semifinals appearance since 2010 after defeating California (Pa.) in straight sets, 3-0, on Tuesday. Head Coach Missy Soboleski's Fighting Scots registered their 31
st win of the season, the most since the 1990 team won 33.
Edinboro earned the top seed in the Western Division despite battling several injuries. Jen Gruber, the teams kill leader from 2014, missed a majority of the season with an injury, while fellow junior Latoya Hutchinson missed some games late in the season with a nagging injury.
Pitt-Johnstown, is 29-5 overall and ranked second in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Rankings. The Lady Cats reached the semifinals by sweeping Lock Haven, 25-15-, 25-20, 25-14 in Tuesday's Quarterfinals in the Sports Center.
Pitt-Johnstown is led by four players averaging more than two kills per set, including Wierman's 3.07 kills per set.
Kendall Mahony (2.88 kps), sophomore outside hitter
Marissa Erminio (2.87 kps), and freshman outside hitter
Maura Brehl (2.38 kps) are also averaging over a pair of kills per set.
The Lady Cats have earned a spot in the PSAC Tournament all three years since joining the conference in 2013, including winning that tournament championship in that first season.
Shippensburg (28-8), the No. 2 seed in the PSAC Eastern Division and the No. 4-seed in the Atlantic Region rankings, is appearing in the PSAC Semifinals for the fourth consecutive year. Shippensburg is the only team to return from last year's semifinals held in Seton Hill. The Raiders defeated West Chester 19-25, 25-16, 25-16, 20-25, 15-6 on Tuesday.
The Raiders lead all of Division II in service aces, averaging 2.04 per set and totaling 259 for the year. Shippensburg also ranks third in the country and atop the PSAC in digs, averaging 19.04 per set and totaling 2,418 this season.
The Raiders are paced by All-PSAC East First Team setter Maura Nolan, who ranks third in the PSAC for total assists (1,158) and has earned two PSAC Player of the Week awards this season. Senior middle blocker Taylor Gottshall, an All-PSAC East Second Team pick this season, enters the weekend just 12 block assists shy of the all-time PSAC record for the category (470, by Edinboro's Mandie Moyer (1996-99).
