The Yellow Jackets answered and outscored Pitt-Johnstown 16-8 over the next 5:48 to retake the lead and build it to 26-19 on Bo King's third three-pointer of the half at the 6:13 mark.
Byer followed with a jumper to pull the Mountain Cats to within 26-23 45 seconds later, but it never got any closer in the first half. The teams exchanged the lead four times over the next five minutes, until Byer's three-pointer gave Pitt-Johnstown a 55-50 lead midway through the half. The Yellow Jackets tie it at 60 3:30 later, but Rudy Roberts' (Cleveland, OH) basket the next trip down the floor gave the Mountain Cats the lead back.
Two Grubbs' free-throws extended the lead to 70-64 with 2:28 on the clock, but Jones connected on a pair of free-throws for West Virginia State to tie the score at 75 with :15 remaining. Justin Banks then made a steal for the Yellow Jackets with seven seconds to play. Jones then knocked down a pair of free-throws after he was fouled by Branch to give West Virginia State the 77-75 victory.
