Battlers Deal Mountain Cats 89-72 Loss

Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College broke open a 39-39 halftime tie with a 20-4 run to begin the second half en route to handing the Mountain Cats an 89-72 loss, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for the Mountain Cats, who lost their fourth straight game and fell to 5-7 overall and 1-6 in the WVIAC.
Two of Mark Summerfield's 18 first-half point put Alderson-Broaddus up 6-0 two minutes into the game.
Pitt-Johnstown outscored the Battlers 9-3 to tie the score at nine at 15:49 on Grubbs' lay-up, before the Mountain Cats took their first lead at 12-11 on Danny Branch's (Washington, D.C) three-pointer less than a minute later.
Alderson-Broaddus regained the lead on another Summerfield three-pointer the next trip down the floor and eventually extended it to nine points at 32-23 on Terrell Eargle's basket with 3:54 remaining.
However, Andy Byer (Tire Hill, Pa.) hit a pair of three-pointers as Pitt-Johnstown outscored the Battlers, 16-7 the rest of the way to pull even at 39 at halftime.
Alderson-Broaddus opened-up the second half on an 20-4 run, capped by Jamar Board's three-pointer at 14:09, to give Alderson-Broaddus a 59-43 lead.
Rudy Roberts' (Cleveland, OH) lay-up cut the Mountain Cats' deficit to 61-47, but the Battlers had the answer and built the lead to 23 points on Board's seventh three-pointer of the day with just under nine minutes left.
Pitt-Johnstown pulled to 78-61 on Jordan Miller's (Mineral Point, Pa.) basket at the 6:56 mark, but the Mountain Cats never got any closer.
Pitt-Johnstown, which was out-rebounded 40-27, shot 48.1% from the field, 7-19 from behind the three-point line and 13-22 from the charity stripe. Alderson-Broaddus ended the day shooting 50% from the field, and 8-10 from the free-throw line. The Battlers also hit 17 three-pointers.
Grubbs finished with 18 point on 6-8 shooting from the floor and 6-11 from the free-throw line. Branch had 16 points, including three three-pointers, while Miller's 10 points off the bench rounded out the Mountain Cats who scored in double-figures. Nick Novak (Murrysville, Pa.) added nine points and Byer had eight points and six assists.
Board connected on nine three-pointers and led all scorers with 29 points. Summerfield chipped in 25 points, while Eargle had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Battlers, who made it nine straight wins and improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
The Mountain Cats will host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats against Shepherd (WV) University on Monday. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., with the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
