Mountain Cats Roll Over Central Penn, 100-54

Pitt-Johnstown used a 36-0 first half run to help build a 37-point halftime lead en route to a dominating 100-54 non-conference victory over Central Penn College, Wednesday night in the Sports Center. Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) scored a game high 17 points, and Jordan Miller (Vinco, Pa.) and Bill Luther (Gibsonia, Pa.) added 16 and 15 points, respectively to pace Pitt-Johnstown, which improved to 8-2 on the year.
Danny Branch's (Washington, D.C.) dunk five seconds into the game set the tone early for Pitt-Johnstown.
Jake Milusnic's basket at 17:03 got Central Penn to within one at 10-9, but the Mountain Cats exploded on a 36-0 run over the next 10 minutes to put the game away. Pitt-Johnstown hit five three-pointers during the run, including two apiece by Miller and Paul Weatherly (Johnstown, Pa.), before a Kevin Byer's (Davidsville, Pa.) lay-up with 7:13 remaining in the first half gave the Mountain Cats a 46-9 lead.
Pitt-Johnstown pushed the lead out to 40 points at 54-14 with three minutes left on two of Jordan Albert's (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) eight first half points, before Pitt-Johnstown went into the halftime break lup 59-22.
It was more of the same in the second half. Luther's three-pointer at 15:44 capped a quick 9-2 run to start the half and extend the Pitt-Johnstown advantage to 68-24.
Central Penn got the deficit down to 35 on David Squires' basket in the paint with just under 12 minutes to play, but the Mountain Cats got the lead back to 44 at 82-38 on two Grubbs' free-throws at 9:53.
Pitt-Johnstown built its largest led of the night and set the final at 100-54 on Albert's basket with 1:03 remaining.
Grubbs led all scorers with 17 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor and a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line. Grubbs also pulled down eight rebounds. Miller had 16 points and five assists, and Luther collected 15 points and seven rebounds. Byer finished with 12 points and had a career-high 10 rebounds, while Albert rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points. Kevin Stapleton (Indiana, Pa.) chipped in eight points off the bench.
Branch, who holds the Mountain Cat career-record for three-pointers with 209, also ranks 11th on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Scoring List with 1,207 points. Grubbs stands in ninth-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Rebounding List with 580. Grubbs is also 55 points away from becoming the 22nd Mountain Cat to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
The Mountain Cats, who lead NCAA Division II in field goal percentage, shot 51.4% (37-72) from the field, 11-21 from three-point range and 15-17 from the free-throw line. Pitt-Johnstown, which owned a 49-36 advantage in rebounding, held Central Penn to just 32.4% (23-71) shooting, including just 3-19 from behind the three-point line.
Montez Lacy led the way fro Central Penn with 16 points. With the loss, Central Penn fell to 8-9.
The Mountain Cats travel to West Virginia State University on Saturday and to Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Monday for WVIAC games, before hosting a conference doubleheader with the Lady Cats against Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Thursday, January 13 at 8 p.m. in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 6 p.m.
