Mountain Cats Defeat PSU-New Kensington, 72-57

Sophomore guard Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tied his career-high with 12 points and grabbed a career six rebounds to help lead Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats to a 72-57 win over Penn State-New Kensington, Monday night in the Sports Center. With the victory, the Mountain Cats have won three straight games and improved to 11-5 on the season.
Ionadi finished 5-7 from the field and 3-4 from three-point range in 16 minutes off of Coach Rukavina's bench, while junior forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) led the Mountain Cats with 16 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor and 4-6 from the free-throw line. Gilliam also pulled down six rebounds. Sophomore guard Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) chipped in 14 points, six rebounds and four assists, and sophomore center Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Dwight Hines (Aliquippa, Pa.) dished out a game-high six assists and scored five points to move to within 36 points of becoming the 17th Mountain Cat to reach the 1,000-point plateau. With his 16 points, Gilliam now has 944 points.
The Mountain Cats built a 44-29 halftime lead and increased that lead to 23 points with 5:26 to play in the game, before going on to the 15-point win.
Pitt Johnstown shot 47.5% (28-59) from the field, 31.3% (5-16) from behind the three-point line and 64.7% (11-17) from the free-throw line, while holding Penn State-New Kensington to just 19-55 (34.5%) shooting from the field and 6-23 (26.1%) from three-point range. The Lions were also 13-15 (86.7%) from the free-throw line. Pitt Johnstown out-rebounded Penn State-New Kensington, 42-30, and held a 16-11 advantage on the offensive boards.
Mike Fisher's game-high 17 points led three Lions who scored in double figures. R.J. Hurt (14 points) and Cal Santucci-Ellwood (11 points) also scored in double figures, while Hurt pulled down nine rebounds to lead Penn State-New Kensington, now 3-9 on the year.
Pitt Johnstown begins a three-game road trip at West Chester University on Wednesday. The Mountain Cats return to the Sports Center to host Columbia Union (MD) College on Saturday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m.
