Mountain Cats Stay Unbeaten In WVIAC With 92-49 win Over WV Wesleyan

Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Mountain Cat Men's basketball team to a lopsided, 92-49, win over West Virginia Wesleyan College in WVIAC action, Saturday night in the Sports Center. Head Coach Bob Rukavina's team improved to 7-3 overall and remained undefeated in the WVIAC at 5-0.
Gilliam's first half double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds gave the Mountain Cats a 45-22 halftime lead. The Mountain Cats built the to 80-31 with 5:57 to play, before cruising to the 43-point victory.
Gilliam's game-high 23 points on 10-13 shooting from the field and 3-4 from the free-throw line led four Mountain Cats who scored in double figures. With his 23-point effort, Gilliam climbed into fifth place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,325 career points. He is now 21 points behind Devlin Herring (1994-98) for fourth place on the scoring list. In addition, his 15 rebounds moved him into ninth place on the All-Time Rebounding List with 507 rebounds. Gilliam needs five rebounds to tie Glenn Fisher (1976-81) for eighth place on the list.
Junior forward Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) collected 21 points on 8-14 shooting and 5-5 from the free-throw line, while freshman Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) poured in 18 points and grabbed five rebounds off of the bench. Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Coach Rukavina also got eight points and a career-high eight assists from sophomore guard Andy Byer (Tire Hill, Pa.) and seven points and a career-high nine rebounds from sophomore forward Steve Heidenthal (Clymer, Pa.) in the victory.
Pitt Johnstown improved on its 47.2% shooting in the first half to 50.0% in the second half to end the night shooting 48.6% (35-72). The Mountain Cats also hit seven three-pointers and connected on 15-18 (83.3%) from the free-throw line. Pitt Johnstown out rebounded the Bobcats, 53-33 and held a 56-12 advantage in points in the paint.
Steve Nichols scored 12 points and had six rebounds, and Justin Caldwell chipped in 12 points and four rebounds for the Bobcats, who fell to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain host Penn State-Greater Allegheny on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The Penn State-Greater Allegheny game was originally scheduled for December 15, but was postponed due to a forcasted snowstorm.
