Dwight Hines' Late Jumper Lifts Mountain Cats Over UDC

Mountain Cat senior guard Dwight Hines (Aliquipa, Pa.) hit a jumper with :08 left to play in the game to lift Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats to a, 71-70, win at the University of the District of Columbia, Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Pitt Johnstown improved to 12-6 on the season.
The Mountain Cats were trailing, 70-69, with :26 to play when senior guard J.J. Schumacher (Castle Shannon, Pa.) made a steal to give the Mountain Cats a chance for the win. With the clock winding down, Hines jump shot found the bottom of the net to give Pitt Johnstown the victory.
Junior forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore guard Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds, while sophomore guard Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 13 points off of Coach Rukavina's bench. Schumacher and sophomore forward Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) chipped in seven points apiece, and sophomoe center Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Mountain Cats.
With his nine points, Hines climbed to within 18 points of joing the 1,000-point scorer's club. Gilliam now has 965 career points.
Pitt Johnstown held a slim, 29-27, halftime lead. The teams battled back and forth in a game that saw the scored tied on 15 different occasions.
The Mountain Cats shot 41.7% (25-60) from the field, 53.8% (7-13) from three-point range and 66.7% (14-21) from the free-throw line. The Firebirds were 25-61 (41.0%) from the floor, 4-17 (23.5%) from behind the three-point line and 16-21 (76.2%) from the free-throw line.
Antwon Hawkins' game-high 26 points on 7-13 shooting from the field and 11-14 shooting from the free-throw line led U.D.C. Frank Peterson (15 points) and Willie Shaw (14 points) also scored in double figures for the Firebirds, now 10-6 on the year.
The Mountain Cats will wrap up a three-game road trip at Mansfield University on Wednesday, before hosting Columbia Union (MD) College on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
