Mountain Cats Cruise to 82-59 Win Over Bluefield State

Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored a game-high 19 point and grabbed eight rebounds to lead an attack that saw nine Mountain Cats dent the scoring column in a lopsided, 82-59, victory over visiting Bluefield State (WV) College, Thursday night in the Sports Center. With the win, Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats improved to 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the WVIAC.
Pitt Johnstown broke open a 20-17 game at the 8:43 mark of the first with a 25-2 run to close out the half to take a 45-19 halftime lead. The Mountain Cats came out and extended the lead to 74-36 midway through the second half, before earning the 23-point victory.
Davis shot an impressive 8-10 from the field and 3-4 from three-point range. He also had four assists, three steals and tied Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) for game-high in rebounds with eight. Along with his eight rebounds, Gilliam collected 14 points on 6-7 shooting from the field and 2-2 from the free-throw line, while chipping in four assists, a pair of steals and one block. Coach Rukavina also got a career-high nine points from Jordan Medich (North Huntingdon, Pa.) and nine points and five rebounds from Steve Heidenthal (Clymer, Pa.) off of the bench. Freshman Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) scored eight points and had six rebounds. Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) and Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also scored eight points apiece, and William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) dished out a game-high nine assists and blocked four shots.
The Mountain Cats, who outscored the Big Blues, 50-14, in the paint, shot 54.0% (34-63) from the field and 37.5% (6-16) from behind the three-point line, while holding Bluefield State to just 23-64 (35.9%) shooting for the game. Pitt Johnstown also held a 41-33 advantage in rebounding.
Shannon Thomas and Logan Shortridge each scored 16 points to lead four Bluefield State players who scored in double figures. Rico Thomas (11 points) and Jevon Carpenter (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Big Blues, who dropped to 1-14 overall and 1-7 in WVIAC play.
The Mountain Cats continue a three-game home stand against Concord (WV) University on Saturday as part of a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats beginning at 2:00 p.m. Saturday is also "Think Pink" Breast Cancer Awareness Day. All Fans are encouraged to join the coaches, players and staff in wearing pink. All fans wearing pink will be admitted free of charge to the doubleheader. A $2.00 donation to the Joyce Murtha Breast Cancer Center at Windber Medical Center would be appreciated.
