#20 Mountain Cats Roll to 107-50 Win Over PSU-New Kensington

Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds lead the #200-ranked Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cat basketball team to a lopsided 107-50 victory over Penn State-New Kensington, Wednesday night in the Sports Center. Every Mountain Cat scored at least three points to help head coach Bob Rukavina's team improve to 4-0.
Pitt-Johnstown broke open a 9-6 lead three minutes into the game with a 33-18 run over the next 12 minutes, before taking a 46-24 halftime lead. The Mountain Cats continued to put the pressure on in the second half and increased the 22-point halftime lead to 72-29 on William Sharpe's (Johnstown, Pa.) free-throw with 11:57 to play in the game. Seven minutes later, the lead ballooned to 60 points when Jordan Medich (North Huntingdon, Pa.) made it 99-39 with 4:39 left on the clock.
Grubbs, who now has three-double-doubles in four games to start his collegiate career, finished with 16 points on 7-10 shooting with a pair of free-throws to lead seven Pitt-Johnstown players who scored in double figures. Grubbs also grabbed 14 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive end, while Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.), Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Sharpe all tallied 14 points. Davis also collected six rebounds and a game-high seven assists, and Sharpe chipped in six rebounds and six assists to go along with his 14 points. Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) scored 12 points, and Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Steve Heidenthal (Clymer, Pa.) rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points apiece. Coach Rukavina also got nine points and seven rebounds from Andy Byer (Tire Hill, Pa.) and eight rebounds from Heidenthal.
With his 14 points, Tullis jumped Josue Nieves (1997-98, 99-00) and Ron Haden (1993-95) and moved into 17th place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,035 points.
Pitt-Johnstown wrapped up the night shooting an impressive 52.9% (46-87) from the field and 76.9% (10-13) from the free-throw line, while holding the Penn State-New Kensington to just 27.6% (16-58). The Mountain Cats out-rebounded the Lions 58-28, including holding a 28-13 advantage on the offensive glass.
Mike Fisher scored a game-high 19 points and dished out six assists, and Joe Mandak added 16 points and five rebounds for Penn State-New Kensington, which dropped to 0-5.
Pitt-Johnstown will host Bloomsburg University on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats will then travel to Shippensburg University on Monday to begin a stretch of five-straight road games.
