Mountain Cats Improve to 8-1 in WVIAC With, 79-68, Win Over Concord

Senior forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) poured in a game-high 26 points and eight rebounds to help the Mountain Cat men's basketball team hold off a second half rally in a, 79-68, win over Concord (WV) University on "Think Pink" Breast Cancer Awareness Day, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. With the win, Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats improved to 11-4 overall and share a first place lead in the WVIAC with an 8-1 record.
Pitt Johnstown rebounded from a 32-19 deficit with 9:38 to play in the first half, by closing out the half on a, 24-11, run to take, 43-34, halftime lead. The Mountain Cats built the lead to 13-points with 9:33 to play, before Concord went on a 9-0 run of its own over the next 2:37 to cut the lead to, 64-60. However, Pitt Johnstown outscored the Mountain Lions, 15-8, to finish the game and earn the 11-point win.
Gilliam, who stands in third place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,424 points and eighth place on the rebounding list with 546 rebounds, shot 11-13 from the field and 4-5 from the free-throw line to lead four Mountain Cats who scored in double figures. Junior forward Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) scored 13 points and tied Gilliam for game-high in rebounds with eight. Junior guard Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 10 points, pulled down five rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists to round out the double figure scorers. Steve Heidenthal (Clymer, Pa.) and Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) each scored eight points in the win.
The Mountain Cats shot an impressive 56.4% (31-55) from the field and 35.3% (6-17) from three-point range, while holding Concord to just 43.3% (26-60) shooting from the field and 36.0% (9-25) from behind the three-point line. Pitt Johnstown also out rebounded the Mountain Lions, 41-26,and held a, 15-10, advantage on the offensive end.
Anthony Lansdowne led Concord with 16 points, including four first half three-pointers. Cordale Boyd and Rafee Smith each scored 13 points, while Dannie Parker had 11 points for the Mountain Lions, who fell to 6-10 overall and 1-8 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats wrap-up a three-game home stand against Salem International (WV) as part of a doubleheader with the Lady Cats, Monday night in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
