Mountain Cats Fall Short at Lock Haven, 71-70

Junior forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) scored 18 points and senior guard Dwight Hines (Aliquippa, Pa.) added 17 points, but Mountain Cats were unable to fully erase a five-point deficit with :21 to play and suffered a 71-70 loss Wednesday night at Lock Haven University. With the loss, Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats, ranked #10 in the East Region, slipped to 19-8.
Sophomore guard Quinton Davis's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rebound off of a miss free-throw with :06 to play gave Pitt Johnstown a shot to win the game, but the Mountain Cats were unable to convert and suffered a tight, one-point loss.
Gilliam wrapped up the night 5-5 from the field, including his first three-pointer of the year, and 7-9 from the free-throw line, while Hines was 6-15 from the field, 2-6 from three-point range and 3-6 from the free-throw line. Davis finsihed with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, while sophomore forward Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) and sophomore center Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each chipped in eight points and five rebounds. Coach Rukavina also got six points, five rebounds and three assists from senior guard J.J. Schumacher (Castle Shannon, Pa.).
With his 17 points, Hines passed Paul Byer (2002-05) now stands in 10th place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,114 points, while Gilliam also passed Byer and is just two points behind Hines in 11th place on the scoring list with 1,112 career points. Schumacher who is fourth on the All-Time Assist List, eclipsed the 400-assist mark and now has 402 career assists.
The Mountain Cats shot an impressive 49.1% (27-55) from the field, while holding the Bald Eagles to just 42.1% (24-57) from the field. However, Lock Haven made five three-pointers and connected on 17-25 (68.0%) from the free-throw line, while Pitt Johnstown hit four three-pointers and was 13-20 (65.0%) from the free-throw line.
Billy Arre's game-highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds led the way for Lock Haven. Justin Wilson and James Chappell scored 15 and 14 points, respectively for the Bald Eagles, who improved to 11-15 on the year.
The Mountain Cats finish the 2006-07 regular season by traveling to the National Independent Tournament in Fort Myers, FL from February 25-27 where they will take on Georgia Southern State University in Sunday's first round.
