Mountain Cats Earn, 93-82, Home Win Over Salem International

Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD), this week's WVIAC men's basketball player of the week, scored a game-high 29 points and pulled down nine rebounds to help Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats improve to 12-4 overall and 9-1 in the WVIAC with a, 93-82, win over Salem International (WV) University, Monday night in the Sports Center.
Pitt Johnstown broke open a slim, 29-27, lead with 7:27 to play in the first half with 20-9 run to end the half and take 49-36 halftime lead. The Mountain Cats increased the lead to 20 points at the 8:51 mark of the second half and never let Salem International get closer than 10 points, before going on the the 11-point win.
Gilliam wrapped up the night shooting 11-15 from the field and 7-8 from the free-throw line for his 29 points. His 1,453 career points are 37 shy of Quinn Harris (1988-92) for second place on the Mountain Cat All-time Scoring List. His team-high nine rebounds moved him to within one of Carlos Cogsdell (2001-05) for seventh place on the rebounding list.
Along with Gilliam, three other Mountain Cats scored in double figures. Freshman Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) scored 17 points off of the bench, while Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 15 points, five rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Junior forward Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and blocked two shots. Coach Rukavina also got nine points, six rebounds and six assists from William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) to help Pitt Johnstown win its third straight game.
The Mountain Cats ended the night shooting 56.3% (36-64) from the field and 40.0% (6-15) from three-point range. Pitt Johnstown held the Tigers to just 40.9% (27-66) shooting. Salem International also made 16 three-pointers and 12 of its 14 free-throws.
Curtis Dorsey scored 23 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds, while Rashard Petty tallied 23 points and six rebounds to lead the Tigers, who fell to 3-13 overall and 1-9 in WVIAC play.
The Mountain Cats travel to Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Thursday and to Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Saturday for conference games, before returning home to host Glenville State (WV) College as part of a doubleheader with the Lady Cats, Monday night in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
