Mountain Cats Suffer, 85-75, Loss at Davis & Elkins

Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) led four Mountain Cats who scored in double figures with 17 points, but Davis & Elkins (WV) College made six free-throws in the last 1:14 to seal the victory and hand Pitt Johnstown an, 85-75, road loss, Thursday night. With the loss, the Mountain Cats dropped to 12-5 overall and 9-2 in the WVIAC.
The Senators opened up a, 37-31, hafltime after a first half that featured five lead changes and seven ties. Davis & Elkins increased the lead to 42-35 at the 18:13 mark of the second half, before the Mountain Cats battled back to take a, 57-52, lead of its own with 11:18 to play. However, the Senators regained the lead for good at 64-63 at the 6:27 mark and went to outscore Pitt Johnstown 21-12 and hit six key free-throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Along with Tullis' 17 points, Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 16 points and Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 15 points on 6-9 shooting from the field. Senior forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) rounded out the double figure scorers with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Head Coach Bob Rukavina also got eight points and a team-high six assists from point guard William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) in the loss.
With his 14 points, Gilliam's now has 1,467 career points. He is 23 points shy of Quinn Harris (1988-92) for second place on the Mountain Cat All-time Scoring List. With his 11 rebounds, Gilliam jumped Carlos Cogsdell (2001-05) for seventh place and Harris for sixth place on the rebounding list. Gilliam's 566 career rebounds are now 31 shy of Alan Young (1970-73) for fifth place on the list.
The Mountain Cats shot a solid 52.5% (32-61) from the field and made seven three-pointers. However, the Mountain Cats, one of the top free-throw shooting teams in the country, struggled from the line, making just four of their 12 attempts. Davis & Elkins ended the night shooting 54.4% (31-57) from the field and 48.3% (14-29) from behind the three-point line. The Senators also connected on 9 of their 11 free-throws and out rebounded Pitt Johnstown, 36-29.
Brett Rector scored 22 points and Danny Manuel added 21 points to lead Davis & Elkins. The Senators, who improved to 10-8 overall and 6-5 in conference play, also got 15 points and seven rebounds from Jelani Jackson, and 12 points and eight rebounds from Alex Olson.
The Mountain Cats travel to Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Saturday for a conference game, before hosting Glenville State (WV) College as part of a doubleheader with the Lady Cats, Monday night in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
