Davis Scores 1,000th Point But #22 Mountain Cats' Fall 70-55 at Shepherd

Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 13 points to become the 20th Mountain Cat to reach the 1,000-point plateau, but the #22-ranked Pitt-Johnstown basketball team suffered a 70-55 loss at WVIAC rival Shepherd (WV) University, Saturday night. Pitt-Johnstown dropped to 6-3 on the year and 2-1 in conference action.
Davis, who entered the game 11 points shy of 1,000 career points, reached the milestone with a pair of free-throws with :46 left to play. Davis currently stands in 20th place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,002 points and 10th on the all-time assist list with 278 assists. Earlier this season, Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) became the 19th Mountain Cat player to eclipse 1,000 points. Tullis ranks 12th on the Pitt-Johnstown scoring list with 1,125 points. Tullis is now 20 points away from Dwight Hines (2002-07) for 11th place and 22 points away from Don Elzer (1973-77) for 10th place on the scoring list, while Davis needs 21 points to tie Josue' Nieves (1997-00) for 19th place.
After a 2-2 tie :47 into the game, Shepherd went on a 29-8 run over the next 13 minutes to build a 31-10 lead, and the Mountain Cats were never able to recover. The Rams maintained the 21-point lead with 2:14 to play, before Pitt-Johnstown closed out the first half on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 43-28 at halftime.
The Mountain Cats kept the momentum to start the second half and cut the lead to 47-39 on Davis' layup with 14:03 to play. However, the Rams rebuilt the advantage to 17 points six minutes later and to 70-50 with 1:10 to play, before going on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown by 15.
Along with his 13 points, Davis also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, dished out three assists and made three steals. Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) added 11 points and six rebounds, while Tullis and Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied 10 points apiece. William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) chipped in five points and five rebounds in the loss.
The Mountain Cats struggled from the field, shooting a season-low 37.5% (21-56) and 20.0% (4-20) from three-point range. Pitt-Johnstown was also just 9-16 from the free-throw line. The Rams finished the night shooting 44.1% (26-59) from the field, 8-22 from behind the three-point line and 10-12 from the charity stripe. Both teams pulled down 36 rebounds.
Jonathan Motichka scored a game-high 26 points and had seven rebounds to lead Shepherd. Tyrone Roach had 12 points, and Liki Turner scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to help Shepherd improve to 3-7 overall and 2-1 in the WVIAC.
Pitt-Johnstown will host Fairmont State (WV) University on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center as part of a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats. The Lady Cats will tip-off aganst the Lady Falcons at 5:30 p.m.
