Mountain Cats Earn, 87-84 Win at East Region #4 Alderson-Broaddus; Gilliam Moves into Second Place on Mountain Cat Scoring List

Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) scored 25 points to move into second place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, and Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) added 25 points to help the Mountain Cats erase a nine-point halftime deficit and earn an 87-84 win at East Region #4 Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College, Saturday night. With the win, the Mountain Cats improved to 13-5 overall and 10-2 in conference play and moved to within a half game of WVIAC leading West Liberty State (WV) College.
The Battlers broke open a 33-30 lead with 5:13 to play in the first half by going on a 12-6 run to close out the half and take a 45-36 lead. However, Pitt Johnstown erased the deficit with an 18-8 run over the first 8:17 of the second half to take a 54-53 lead. The Mountain Cats would never give up the lead and built their own 12-point lead with 3:45 to play, before holding on for the four-point win.
Gilliam and Tullis combined for 50 of Pitt Johnstown's 87 points. Gilliam ended the night shooting 9-18 from the field and 7-8 from the free-throw line, while Tullis was 11-15 from the field and 3-3 from the the free-throw line. Junior guard Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out a team-high eight assists. Head Coach Bob Rukavina also got nine points on three three-pointers from freshman Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.), and five points, six rebounds and six assists from point guard William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) in the victory.
With his 25 points, Gilliam now has 1,492 career points and stands in second place on the Mountain Cat All-time Scoring List. Gilliam is 581 points away from Justin Walther (1996-2000) for first place on the scoring list. With his 12 rebounds, Gilliam stands in sixth place on the All-Time Rebounding list with 578. He is 19 shy of Alan Young (1970-73) for fifth place on the list.
The Mountain Cats, who shot an impressive 64.0% in the first half and still trailed by nine points, finished the night shooting 53.4% (31-58) from the field and 30.0% (3-10) from behind the three-point line. Pitt Johnstown also hit 22 of its 29 free throws, while the Battlers were just 12-19 (63.2%) from the charity stripe. Alderson-Broaddus shot 45.3% (34-75) from the field and just 4-22 from three-point range.
Stan Hall led Alderson-Broaddus with 24 points. Terrell Eargle (18 points), Jimmy Williams (16 points) and Samario Clancy (14 points) also scored in double figures. Clancy and Eargle each had nine rebounds for the Battlers, who dropped to 14-5 overall and fell into a tie with Pitt Johnstown for second place with a 10-2 record in WVIAC play.
The Mountain Cats will host Glenville State (WV) College as part of a doubleheader with the Lady Cats, Monday night in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
