Mountain Cats Cruise to 78-61 Win Over Fairmont State

Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) poured in 22 points to lead the Mountain Cat men's basketball team a 78-61 victory over visiting Fairmont State (WV) University, Saturday night in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in WVIAC play.
Fairmont connected on five three-pointers in the first 10 minutes and ran out to a 19-10 lead with 9:59 to play in the first half. Pitt-Johnstown answered with an 18-3 run, capped by Marcus Tullis' (Johnstown, Pa.) layup with 3:00 left to give the Mountain Cats a 28-22 lead. Pitt-Johnstown maintained the lead and took a 36-29 halftime advantage.
Patrick Grubbs' (Turtle Creek, Pa.) layup and made free-throw gave Pitt-Johnstown a 44-32 lead 2:21 into the second half. The Falcons cut the deficit to 46-39 two minutes later, but Quinton Davis' (Pittsburgh, Pa.) three-pointer the next trip down the floor extended the lead back to double-digits. Fairmont State never got any closer than 11 points. Pitt-Johnstown increased the lead to 71-52 on Tullis' dunk with 5:19 to play and cruised to the 17-point victory.
Tullis led three Mountain Cats who scored in double figures with 22 points on 10-14 shooting from the field and 2-2 from the free-throw line. Tullis also pulled down five rebounds, while Grubbs chipped in 19 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Davis had 16 points and six assists to round out the double figure scorers. Head coach Bob Rukavina also got eight points and a game-high seven assists from William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) in the win.
Tullis now ranks 10th on the Pitt-Johnstown scoring list with 1,168points. Tullis is six points away from Tyrone Doleman (1986-88) for ninth place on the scoring list. Davis currently stands in 18th place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,036 points and 10th on the all-time assist list with 289. Davis needs four points to tie Steve Scorpion (2002-06) for 17th place place on the scoring list and five assists to tie Dwight Hines (2002-07) for ninth place on the assists list. Sharpe needs five assists to tie Tony Mazonkey (1975-79) fifth place on the assist list.
Pitt-Johnstown, which out rebounded Fairmont State 33-27 and forced 20 turnovers, shot an impressive 55.2% (32-58) from the field and 11-14 from the free-throw line, while holding the Falcons to just 42.6% (23-54) shooting and just 4-7 from the free-throw line. Fairmont State connected on 11-24 from three-point range.
Michael Lopez scored 22 points and Thad McFadden tallied 20 points to lead the Falcons, who fell to 7-2 overall and 1-2 in the WVIAC.
Pitt-Johnstown will host WVIAC doubleheaders in the Sports Center against Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Thursday and Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Saturday. The Lady Cats will tip-off both doubleheaders at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's games at 7:30 p.m.
