Mountain Cats Defeat U.D.C. to Place Fifth at National Independent Tournament

Sophomore forward Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.), an All-Tournament Team selection, scored 15 points to lead six Mountain Cats who scored in double figures to lead Pitt Johnstown to an 82-65 victory over the University of the District of Columbia and a fifth place finish at Tuesday's National Independent Tournament in Fort Myers, FL. The Mountain Cats ended the regular season with a 21-9 record.
Along with Tullis' 15 points, Head Coach Bob Rukavina also got 12 points each from senior guard Dwight Hines (Aliquippa, Pa.) and junior forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD), and 10 points apiece from senior guard J.J. Schumacher (Castle Shannon, Pa.), sophomore guard Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore center Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Sophomore guard Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored eight points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds in the win.
Gilliam jumped Don Elzer (1973-77) into ninth place on the Mountain Cat All-time Scoring List with 1,154 points, while Hines is in 11th place on the scoring list with 1,145 career points.
The Mountain Cats broke open a 38-38 halftime score by outscoring the Firebirds, 44-27, in the second half. Pitt Johnstow went on a 15-6 run over the last six minutes to earn the 17-point win and sweep this season's three games against U.D.C.
Antwon Hawkins scored a game-high 23 points to pace U.D.C. Frank Peterson added 15 points and Willie Shaw scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Firebirds, now 18-9 on the season.
