01/17/2009

Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored a career-high 34 points, including 29 in the first half, but his three-pointer from the corner with :17 remaining rimmed out and the Mountain Cats suffered a 71-69 loss to #15 Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College, Saturday night in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown is now 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the WVIAC.
Davis' three-pointer at the 15:25 mark of the first half gave Pitt Johnstown an 11-6 lead, but Alderson-Broaddus battled back to take an 18-17 advantage on Sam Liggins' three-pointer five minutes later. Pitt-Johnstown answered to retake the lead 23-20, but the Battlers rattled off an 11-0 run, including eight straight from Zach Green, to build a 31-23 lead with 5:10 remaining in the half. Once again, the Mountain Cats went on a run. This time, Pitt-Johnstown outscored Alderson-Broaddus 17-7, capped when Davis stole an inbounds pass and laid it in with :22 to give Pitt-Johnstown a 40-38 halftime lead and end his half with 29 points.
The Mountain Cats maintained the momentum to start the second half. Marcus' Tillis' (Johnstown, Pa.) jumper in the lane extended the lead to 51-44 seven minutes into the half, then to 62-51 on Steve Heidenthal's (Clymer, Pa.) layup with 7:48 to play. The Battlers fought all the way back to tie the score at 68-68 on Liggins' long three-pointer with 1:16 on the clock. An Alderson-Broaddus lay-up following a missed three-pointer by Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) gave the Battlers the lead for good at 70-68 with :39 left. Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) hit 1-2 from the free-throw line to cut the deficit to one. Davis was fouled on the rebound to give the ball back to Pitt-Johnstown. However, his three-pointer rimmed out. The Mountain Cats had one more chance, but Branch's jump shot was blocked by Stan Hall as time expired.
Davis finished the night shooting 12-19 from the field, 3-6 from three-point range and 7-7 from the free-throw line. Davis also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) had eight points and seven rebounds, while Tullis collected eight points and three rebounds, and Heidenthal chipped in six points and three rebounds in the loss.
Tullis now ranks ninth on the Pitt-Johnstown scoring list with 1,193 points. Tullis is 45 points away from Mike Gresik (1981-85) for eighth place on the scoring list. Davis currently stands in 14th place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,085 points and 10th on the all-time assist list with 291. Davis needs 25 points to tie Paul Byer (2002-05) for 13th place place on the scoring list and three assists to tie Dwight Hines (2002-07) for ninth place on the assists list. Sharpe stands in fifth place on the assist list with 400, just 18 assists shy of J.J. Schumacher (2002-04, 2005-07) for fourth place.
The Mountain Cats shot 43.5% from the field, 35.7% (5-14) from behind the three-point line and 90.9% (10-11) from the free-throw line. Alderson-Broaddus, which held a slim 36-34 rebounding advantage, ended the night shooting 45.9% from the field and 35.7% (10-28) from three-point range. The Battlers also hit 5-7 from the charity stripe.
Hall and Liggins led Alderson-Broaddus with 21 and 20 points respectively. Liggins, the nation's leader in three-point field goals per game, connected on 6-11 from behind the arc. Green rounded out the double figure scorers with 15 points, while Montel Lee pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. The Battlers improved to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the WVIAC.
