Men's Basketball Runs By Bluefield State, 76-51

Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 16 points and Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) added 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to lead the Mountain Cat basketball team to a 76-51 win at Bluefield State (WV) College on Saturday. Pitt-Johnstown, which shot 61.5% from the game, improved to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats clawed their way to a 25-17 lead on Andy Byer's (Tire Hill, Pa.) jumper with 7:07 to play in the first half. Bluefield State kept it close and cut the lead to 25-23 with 5:48 remaining, but Pitt-Johnstown outscored the Big Blues 8-3 the rest of the way, including a three-pointer by Davis with 1:22 on the clock, to take a 33-27 advantage at halftime.
The Mountain Cats broke things open in the second half. Grubbs' layup at the 14:10 mark extended the lead to 48-32, and the Pitt-Johnstown defense would not allow Bluefield State to get closer than 14. Byer's layup with 1:48 to play gave Pitt-Johnstown its largest lead of the game at 74-46, before the Mountain Cats coasted to the 25-point victory.
Davis led Pitt-Johnstown with 16 points on 6-9 shooting including 4-7 from three-point range. Davis also grabbed six rebounds. Grubbs finished with 14 points on a perfect 7-7 shooting from the field and 10 rebounds. Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) and Steve Heidenthal (Clymer, Pa.) all scored eight points in the balanced Mountain Cat attack. Head coach Bob Rukavina also got seven points apiece from William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) and Tullis, and six points and six rebounds from Byer.
Tullis currently ranks ninth on the Pitt-Johnstown scoring list with 1,214 points. Tullis is 24 points away from Mike Gresik (1981-85) for eighth place on the scoring list. Davis currently stands in 13th place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List (1,124 points), tied for ninth with Glenn Fisher (1976-81) on the rebounding list (512 rebounds) and eighth on the all-time assist list with 300. Davis needs 21 points to tie Dwight Hines (2002-07) for 12th place place on the scoring list. He is also 44 rebounds shy of Carlos Cogsdell (2001-05) for eighth place on the rebounding list and 31 assists away from Joey Tutchstone (2003-06) for seventh place on the assists list. Sharpe stands in fifth place on the assist list with 410, just eight assists shy of J.J. Schumacher (2002-04, 2005-07) for fourth place.
Pitt-Johnstown connected on 61.5% (32-52) from the field, while holding the Big Blues to just 32.8% (19-58) shooting, including just 6-25 from behind the three-point line. The Mountain Cats out rebounded Bluefield State 37-24, and hit 7-18 from three-point range and 5-8 from the charity stripe.
Raylon Almon scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Bluefield State. Brian Tingle added 10 points for the Big Blues, who fell to 1-13 overall and 1-7 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats against the University of Charleston (WV) on Monday. The Lady Cats tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
