Mountain Cats Pummel Seton Hill, 85-57

The Mountain Cats men's basketball team built a 46-20 halftime lead and cruised to an 85-57 victory over Seton Hill University behind a game-high 20 points from Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Saturday night in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown, which saw all every player on the roster score at least three points, has won five straight games and improved 14-4 overall and 10-2 in the WVIAC.
Pitt-Johnstown raced out to a 28-8 lead 12 minutes in the first half and never looked back. Matt Ionadi's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) layup put the Mountain Cats up 18-8 at the 12:31 mark, and Andy Byer's (Tire Hill, Pa.) three-pointer capped the run that gave Pitt-Johnstown the 28-18 advantage. The Mountain Cats took their largest lead of the first half at 44-15 on Marcus Tullis' (Johnstown, Pa.) layup with just over 1:00 left, before Pitt-Johnstown went into halftime ahead 46-20.
It was more of the same in the second half. Tullis' layup three minutes into the half extended the lead to 29 points, before the Griffins used a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 55-33 at the 14:22 mark. Seton Hill never got any closer. Patrick Grubbs' (Turtle Creek, Pa.) lay-up and free-throw gave Pitt-Johnstown its largest lead of the night at 69-37 with 7:06 to play. the Mountain Cats maintained at least a 26-point advantage the rest of the way and cruised to the 28-point win.
Davis led all scorers with 20 points on 7-12 shooting, 4-6 from three-point range and 2-2 from the free-throw line, while Tullis collected 16 points on 6-11 shooting and 4-4 from the charity stripes. Davis pulled down four rebounds, dished out four assists and blocked four shots. Tullis also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end. Grubbs rounded out the double figures scorers with 11 points and seven rebounds. Ionadi scored eight points and had five assists, and William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.), Danny Branch (Washington, Pa.), Steve Heidenthal (Clymer, Pa.) and Byer all chipped in six points in Pitt-Johnstown's balanced attack. Sharpe also had five assists.
Tullis currently ranks seventh on the Pitt Johnstown scoring list with 1,266 points and 10th on the rebounding list with 518. Tullis is 37 points away from Rich Ragan (1974-78) for sixth place on the scoring list and 11 rebounds behind Davis on the rebounding list. Davis is in 10th place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List (1,175 points), ninth on the rebounding list (529 rebounds) and eighth on the all-time assist list (308 assists). Davis needs 63 points to tie Mike Gresik (1981-85) for ninth place place on the scoring list. He is also 27 rebounds shy of Carlos Cogsdell (2001-05) for eighth place on the rebounding list and 23 assists away from Joey Tutchstone (2003-06) for seventh place on the assists list. Sharpe stands in third place on the assist list with 425, just four assists shy of Bob Bauer (1983-87) for second place.
The Mountain Cats ended the night shooting 52.5% (32-61) from the field, 10-23 from three-point range and 11-14 from the free-throw line. Seton Hill was held to 36.9% (24-65) shooting, including 4-14 from behind the three-point line. Pitt-Johnstown out rebounded the Griffins 45-29.
Jordan Thomas scored 17 points, and Conor Tilow tallied 11 points for Seton Hill, which fell to 5-12 overall and 3-8 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats travel to the University of the District of Columbia on Monday and to Glenville State (WV) College on Saturday, before hosting a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats against West Virginia State University on Monday, Feb. 9. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
