Mountain Cats Battle Back for 92-85 Win at Glenville State

Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 29 points and Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) added 26 points to help the Mountain Cats erase a 16-point first half deficit and earn a 92-85 victory at Glenville State (WV) College, Saturday night. Pitt-Johnstown made it seven straight wins and 10 of its last 11 to improve to 16-4 overall and 11-2 in the WVIAC.
Glenville State hit five three-pointers in the first 7:20 to run out to a 24 -8 lead, but the Mountain Cats regrouped to outscore the Pioneers 30-14 over the next 11 minutes to tie the score at 38-38 on Tullis' dunk with 1:38 to play. Andy Byer's (Tire Hill, Pa.) three-pointer from the top of the key with :51 left completed Pitt-Johnstown's first half comeback and gave the Mountain Cats a 42-40 halftime lead.
Pitt-Johnstown outscored Glenville State 14-6 to open the second half to build the lead to 56-46 on a pair of free-throws by Tullis at 15:35. Tryvan Leech's three-pointer at 11:57 cut the Pioneers' deficit to seven, but Davis' bucket 1:15 later extended the Mountain Cat lead to 64-53. Davis then gave the Mountain Cats their largest lead of the game at 80-64 with 3:04 remaining, before Pitt-Johnstown held on for the seven-point victory.
Davis ended the night shooting 10-16 from the field, 3-5 from three-point range and 6-9 from the free-throw line. Davis also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while Tullis shot 12-16 from the field and 2-2 from the charity stripe. Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) finished with 10 points, and William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) and Byer had nine points apiece. Sharpe dished out a game-high eight assists, and Byer pulled down five rebounds and connected on a pair of three-pointers. Head coach Bob Rukavina also got seven rebounds off the bench from Steve Heidenthal (Clymer, Pa.).
Tullis currently ranks sixth on the Pitt-Johnstown scoring list with 1,322 points and 10th on the rebounding list with 526. Tullis is 24 points away from Devlin Herring (1994-98) for fifth place on the scoring list and 16 rebounds behind Davis on the rebounding list. Davis is in 10th place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List (1,222 points), ninth on the rebounding list (542 rebounds) and eighth on the all-time assist list (316 assists). Davis needs 16 points to tie Mike Gresik (1981-85) for ninth place place on the scoring list. He is also 14 rebounds shy of Carlos Cogsdell (2001-05) for eighth place on the rebounding list and 15 assists away from Joey Tutchstone (2003-06) for seventh place on the assists list. Sharpe stands in second place on the assist list with 438, 57 assists shy of Emmanuel Richardson (1996-98) for first place.
The Mountain Cats shot 56.1% (32-57) from the field, while holding the Pioneers to just 42.1%, including 36.0% in the second half. Pitt-Johnstown hit 8-18 from behind the three-point line and 20-28 from the free-throw line. Glenville State was 13-29 from three-point range and 8-9 from the free-throw line.
Leech led the Pioneers with 28 points. Anthony Kimble added 25 points and nine rebounds, and Chase Groves chipped in 14 points for Glenville State, which fell to 12-8 overall and 6-7 in conference play.
The Mountain Cats host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats against West Virginia State University on Monday. The Lady Cats will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. Atlantic Broadband will air Monday's games on a tape-delay basis on channel 14 in the Johnstown market and on channel 9 in the Altoona market.
