Tullis Leads Mountain Cats to 91-69 Win Over Wheeling Jesuit

Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) poured in 22 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to help the Mountain Cats build a 30-point halftime lead en route to a 91-69 victory over Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Breast Cancer Awareness Night, Saturday in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats improved to 17-6 overall and 12-4 in the WVIAC.
Pitt-Johnstown raced out to a 24-9 lead on a Tullis layup 8:41 into the game. Wheeling Jesuit cut the deficit to 27-18 with 8:33 remaining, but that was as close as it would get. Tullis, who finished the first half shooting 10-14 from the field, quickly helped Pitt-Johnstown extend the lead to 21 points with a bucket three minutes later. The Mountain Cats took their largest lead of the first half at 57-25 on another Tullis layup with :41, before going into halftime holding a 57-27 advantage.
The Mountain Cats increased the lead to 34 points on Matt Ionadi's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) basket five minutes into the second half. Wheeling Jesuit battled back to cut the lead to 80-68 on Obi Ukwuoma layup with 3:48 to play, before Pitt-Johnstown cruised to the 22-point win.
Tullis finished with 25 points on 11-20 shooting and 3-6 from the free-throw line. Tullis also matched Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) for team-high with 11 rebounds. Ionadi added 17 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor, while Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Grubbs chipped in 14 points apiece. Andy Byer (Tire Hill, Pa.) had seven points off of the bench, and William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) collected six points, four rebounds and a game-high 10 assists.
Tullis is currently fourth on the Pitt-Johnstown scoring list with 1,388 points and 10th on the rebounding list with 550. Tullis is 102 points away from Quinn Harris (1988-92) for third place on the scoring list and five rebounds behind Davis on the rebounding list. Davis is in eighth place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List (1,274 points), ninth on the rebounding list (555 rebounds) and seventh on the all-time assist list (332 assists). Davis needs 29 points to tie Rich Ragan (1998-03) for seventh place place on the scoring list. He is also one rebound shy of Carlos Cogsdell (2001-05) for eighth place on the rebounding list and 64 assists away from Tony Mazonkey (1975-79) for sixth place on the assists list. Sharpe stands in second place on the assist list with 457, 38 assists shy of Emmanuel Richardson (1996-98) for first place.
Pitt-Johnstown wrapped up the game shooting 53.6% (37-69), including 58.5% in the first half, while holding the Cardinals to just 32.9% (25-76). The Mountain Cats, who held a 46-44 advantage in rebounding, hit 6-18 from three-point range and 11-21 from the free-throw line. Wheeling Jesuit was 8-32 from behind the three-point line and 11-14 from the charity stripe.
Steve Catich led Wheeling Jesuit with 17 points and nine rebounds. Maqsood Harrington added 10 points, and Ukwuoma grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Cardinals, who fell to 10-13 overall and 8-8 in conference play.
The Mountain Cats host a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats against Ohio Valley (WV) University on Thursday in the Sports Center, before traveling to Fairmont State (WV) University on Saturday. The Lady Cats will tip-off Thursday's games at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
