Mountain Cats Dealt 93-85 Loss at Fairmont State

Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa) scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) added 19 points, but Fairmont State (WV) University used a 25-11 second-half run to hand the Mountain Cat basketball team a 93-85 road loss, Saturday evening. With the loss, Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 18-7 overall and 13-5 in the WVIAC.
Dan Bruner's three-pointer gave Fairmont State an early 10-2 lead. The Mountain Cats battled back to tie it 14-14 on Marcus Tullis' (Johnstown, Pa.) rebound and layup, before Pitt-Johnstown took its first lead on William Sharpe's (Johnstown, Pa.) basket with 10:07 remaining. Steve Heidenthal's (Clymer, Pa.) bucket and free-throw gave the Mountain Cats a 31-26 advantage at the 7:41 mark. Fairmont State answered with a 9-0 run to regain the lead with 5:08 remaining on Pete O'Connor's tip-in, but Pitt-Johnstown outscored the Falcons 13-7 the rest of the way, highlighted by a pair of Sharpe dunks, to take a 44-42 halftime lead.
Thad McFadden's three-pointer gave Fairmont State a 46-44 lead two minutes into the second half. The Mountain Cats knotted the score at 51 on Quinton Davis' (Pittsburgh, Pa.) three-pointer, before taking a 58-57 lead on Davis' jumper at 12:20. The Falcons countered with a 25-11 run, capped by Chris Thompson's dunk over the next 19 minutes, to give Fairmont State an 82-69 lead, before holding off the Mountain Cats by eight.
Davis led four Mountain Cats who scored in double figures with 24 points on 9-23 shooting, and 5-14 from three-point range. Davis also pulled down 10 rebounds, while Branch chipped in 19 points off the bench, including five three-pointers. Patrick Grubbs (Turtle Creek, Pa.) netted 10 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds, and Tullis collected 10 points and seven rebounds. Sharpe finished with nine points, five rebounds and six assists.
Tullis is currently fourth on the Pitt-Johnstown scoring list with 1,427 points and tied for eighth on the rebounding list with Quinn Harris (1988-92) with 564. Tullis is 63 points away from Harrisfor third place on the scoring list and six rebounds behind Davis on the rebounding list. Davis is in seventh place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List (1,306 points), seventh on the rebounding list (570 rebounds) and seventh on the all-time assist list (340 assists). Davis needs 40 points to tie Devlin Herring (1994-98) for sixth place place on the scoring list. He is also 27 rebounds shy of Alan Young (1970-73) for sixth place on the rebounding list and 56 assists away from Tony Mazonkey (1975-79) for sixth place on the assists list. Sharpe stands in second place on the assist list with 472, 24 assists shy of Emmanuel Richardson (1996-98) for first place.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 46.7%35-75) from the field with 13 three-pointers. The Mountain Cats, who out rebounded Fairmont State 42-36, only had three free-throw attempts and made two of them. The Falcons ended the night shooting an even 50% (32-64) from the field with 14 three-pointers. Fairmont Stat was also 15-25 from the charity stripe.
McFadden scored 21 of his game-high 37 points in the first half to lead the Falcons. Thompson (17 points), Bruner (12 points) and O'Connor (11 points) also scored in double figures for Fairmont State, which improved to 18-7 overall and 11-7 in league play.
The Mountain Cats return home to host WVIAC doubleheaders with the Lady Cats against Salem International (WV) University on Monday and Shepherd (WV) University to celebrate Senior Day and wrap-up the regular season on Saturday in the Sports Center. The Lady Cats will tip-off Monday's games at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Lady Cats will tip-off at 2:00 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 4:00 p.m.
