Mountain Cats Defeat Davis & Elkins 89-72 to Advance to WVIAC Quarterfinals

Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) scored 28 points and Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 23 points to lead the #4-seeded Mountain Cat basketball team to an 89-72 victory over #13-seeded Davis & Elkins (WV) College in Tuesday's opening round of the 2009 WVIAC Tournament in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats, 21-7 on the year, will take on Glenville State (WV) College in Thursday's quarterfinals at 8:30 p.m. at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, WV.
Pitt-Johnstown ran out to a 24-10 lead on Patrick Grubbs' (Turtle Creek, Pa.) layup 7:34 into the game. Davis & Elkins battled all the back to take a 32-31 lead with a 22-7 run over the next 9:08, capped by Andy Morris' three-pointer with 4:03 remaining . However, the Mountain Cats outscored the Senators 8-0 the rest of the way to rebuild the lead to 39-32 at the half.
Pitt-Johnstown pushed the lead back out to 10 points at 44-34 on Tullis' jumper three minutes into the second half. Davis & Elkins pulled to within six points two minutes later, but that was as close as the Senators would get. Davis' layup and free-throw extended the Mountain Cat lead to 60-47 with 10:45 to play. Pitt-Johnstown took its largest lead of the game 89-70 with :35 left, before cruising to the 17-point victory.
Tullis ended the night with 28 points on 12-19 shooting from the field and five rebounds, while Davis collected 23 points on 9-21 shooting, with a pair of three -pointers. Davis, who was also 3-4 from the free-throw line, had five rebounds and five assists. Grubbs rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Head Coach Bob Rukavina also got nine points, seven rebounds and four assists from Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.), eight points and four assists from William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) and seven points from Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.).
Tullis is currently fourth on the Pitt-Johnstown scoring list with 1,483 points and eighth on the rebounding list with 577. Tullis is seven points away from Quinn Harris (1988-92) for third place on the scoring list and six rebounds behind Davis for seventh place on the rebounding list. Davis is in sixth place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List (1,368 points), seventh on the rebounding list (583 rebounds) and seventh on the all-time assist list (350 assists). Davis needs five points to tie Chris Rhames (1995-98) for fifth place on the scoring list. He is also 14 rebounds shy of Alan Young (1970-73) for sixth place on the rebounding list and 46 assists away from Tony Mazonkey (1975-79) for sixth place on the assists list. Sharpe stands in second place on the assist list with 489, six assists shy of Emmanuel Richardson (1996-98) for first place.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 48.5% (33-68) from the field, 4-15 from three-point range and 19-25 from the free-throw line, while holding the Senators to just 39.3% (24-61) shooting. Davis & Elkins was also 10-28 from behind the three-point line and 14-17 from the charity stripe.
Tim Turner's game-high 38 points led the way for Davis & Elkins. Danny Manuel chipped in 11 points, and Alex Hawkins pulled down seven rebounds for the Senators, ended the season with 10 straight losses and a 7-21 record.
