Mountain Cats Fall, 70-67, at Mansfield University

Senior guard Joey Tutchstone (Vandergrift, Pa.) scored 16 points to lead four Mountain Cats who scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough to carry Pitt Johnstown to a victory, as Mansfield University dealt the Mountain Cats a 70-67 loss, Wednesday night. With the loss, Head Coach Bob Rukavina's team dropped to 16-5 on the season.
Tutchstone, who finished 7-12 from the field, also grabbed six rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. With his two assists, Tutchstone eclipsed the 300-career assists mark. He is now ranked fifth on the Mountain Cat All-Time Assist List with 301 career assists. Red-shirt freshman forward Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) scored 13 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while sophomore forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) scored 12 points on 5-9 shooting and 2-2 from the free-throw line. Gilliam also collected six rebounds. Junior guard J.J. Schumacher (Castle Shannon, Pa.) rounded out the double figures scorers with 10 points. Schumacher also dished out a game-high eight assists and now ranks eighth on the All-Time Assist List with 249 assists. Along with the double-figure scorers, Coach Rukavina got eight points from senior guard Steve Scorpion (Murrysville, Pa.). Scorpion needs just 28 points to become the 16th Mountain Cat 1,000-point scorer. Red-shirt freshman forward Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa.) chipped in five points and six rebounds in 21 minutes off of Coach Rukavina's bench.
After a 30-30 halftime lead, Pitt Johnstown built an eight-point lead with 9:39 to play. The Mountaineers battled back and broke the game's 12th tie on Brandon DeShield's free-throw with 2:36 left in the game. Mansfield would never give up the lead again.
Pitt Johnstown shot 28-61 (45.9%) from the field, while holding the Mountaineers to just 37.7% (20-53). However, Mansfield made six of its 18 three-point field goal attempts and hit 24 of their 34 free-throws, compared to just 4-10 from three point range and 7-14 from the free-throw line for Pitt Johnstown. The Mountain Cats, who out-rebounded Mansfield 39-35, also committed 23 turnovers.
DeShileds scored a game-high 19 points and had six rebuonds, and Carlos Collazo added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Mountaineers, who evened their record at 10-10.
Pitt Johnstown hosts Penn State-McKeesport on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center to start a six-game homestand to end the regular season.
