Mountain Cats Hold Off Glenville State for 85-80 Win

Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) scored a game-high 26 points and Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) hit 7-8 free-throws in the final minute to help Pitt Johnstown hold off Glenville State (WV) College and earn an 85-80 win, Monday night in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats, who moved into a virtual tie for first place in conference play, improved to 14-5 overall and 11-2 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats and Pioneers battled back-and-forth for much of the first half. Pitt Johnstown eventually opened 12-point lead with 3:50 to play in the half, before taking a 39-34 halftime lead. The Mountain Cats increased the lead 57-47 with 13:08 remaining. Glenville State battled back cut the lead to 59-58 at the 7:06 mark of the second half with an 11-2 run. The Pioneers kept the game close and trailed by four with :34 seconds to play, but Davis hit seven of eight free-throws to ice the game for Pitt Johnstown.
Tullis ended the night shooting 12-18 from the field and 2-3 from the free-throw line to lead four Mountain Cats who scored in double figures. Senior forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) added 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds to account for his second straight double-double, and Davis had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Freshman Danny Branch (Washington, D.C.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points, including a pair of first half three-pointers. Head Coach Bob Rukavina also got six points from Andy Byer (Tire Hill, Pa.), five points, six rebounds and five assists from Matt Ionadi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and a game-high nine assists from William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) in the victory.
With his 16 points, Gilliam now has 1,508 career points and stands in second place on the Mountain Cat All-time Scoring List, 565 points away from Justin Walther (1996-2000) for first place on the scoring list. With his 10 rebounds, Gilliam is in sixth place on the All-Time Rebounding list with 588. He is nine shy of Alan Young (1970-73) for fifth place on the list.
Pitt Johnstown, which leads the nation in field goal percentage, shot 51.6% (32-62) from the field, 33.3% (5-15) from three-point range and 66.7% (16-24) from the free-throw line. The Mountain Cats held Glenville State to just 43.5% (27-62) shooting from the field and 30.0% (9-30) from behind the three-point line. The Pioneers were also 17-20 from the free-throw line. Pitt Johnstown out rebounded Glenville State 38-31.
Chase Groves scored 20 points and Mykail Vibbert added 18 points and a game-high 11 points to lead the Pioneers, who fell to 7-13 overall and 5-8 in conference play.
The Mountain Cats travel to WVIAC rivals Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Thursday and West Virginia State University on Saturday, before returning home to host West Liberty State (WV) College on Monday, as part of a WVIAC doubleheader with the Lady Cats. The Lady Cats will play West Liberty State at 5:30 p.m., with the men's game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
