Mountain Cats Knock Off West Virginia State, 86-79 in Sports Center

Marcus Tullis' (Johnstown, Pa.) 15 points paced five Mountain Cats who scored in double figures to lead the Pitt Johnstown men's basketball team to an 86-79 home win over West Virginia State University, Tuesday night in the Sports Center. With the victory, Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats improved to 3-1 on the season.
The Mountain Cats fell behind 4-3 just 2:05 into the game, but that was the last time Pitt Johnstown would trail. The Mountain Cats built a 37-29 halftime lead, before extending it to 14 points with 10:49 to play in the game. The Yellow Jackets cut it to 80-75 with 2:07 to play, but the Mountain Cats were able to hold on for the victory.
Tullis was 6-8 from the field and grabbed four rebounds, while Chirs Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) added 14 points, including 8-10 from the free-throw line, and seven rebounds. Coach Rukavina also got 13 points from senior guard Dwight Hines (Aliquippa, Pa.) and 12 points apiece from center Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and guard Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Goldcamp also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and blocked two shots. Davis chipped in four steals, and senior guard J.J. Schumacher (Castle Shannon, Pa.) dished out a game-high eight assists.
Once again, Pitt Johnstown shot well from the field and the free-throw line. The Mountain Cats finished the game shooting 52.7% (29-55) from the field and connected 24 of their 28 free-throws (85.7%), while holding the Yellow Jackets to 47.3% (26-55) from the field. West Virginia State was 16-22 (72.7%) from the free-throw line. The Yellow Jackets also made 11 three-point field goals.
Ted Scott led West Virginia State with a game-high 21 points on 7-14 shooting from the field. Wade Pidock had 16 points, including five three-pointers. Anton Duncan (14 points) and Tim Contee (13 points) wrapped up the double-figure scorers for the Yellow Jackets, now 2-1 on the year.
The Mountain Cats travel to the Gannon University Gary Miller Classic on Friday and Saturday where they will take on Lock Haven University in Friday's First Round. Pitt Johnstown will then visit West Virginia Wesleyan College on Tuesday, before returning home to host Penn State-Fayette on Monday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
