Mountain Cats Defeat Clarion, 66-57, in Pitt-Johnstown-Cummings Trophies Classic; Davis Named Classic MVP, Gilliam and Mintz All-Classic Team

The Mountain Cat basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 66-57 victory over Clarion University in Saturday's final round of the 2007 Pitt Johnstown-Cummings Trophies & Engraving Classic. Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.), the Classic's Most Valuable Player, led Pitt Johnstown with 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Pitt Johnstown fell behind early, 10-5, but rebounded to take a 12-point lead with 7:26 to play in the first half. The Mountain Cats went into the locker room with a 34-28 lead, but the Golden Eagles battled back to tie the score at 40-40 with 13:26 to play. However, Pitt Johnstown rebuilt its 12-point lead on two more occasions, before earning the nine-point win.
Davis shot 6-8 from the field, including 2-3 from three-point range, and 3-3 from the free-throw line. All-Classic Team selections Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) and Rashad Mintz (Washington, D.C.) added 17 and 11 points, respectively for Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats. Gilliam also grabbed eight rebounds amd made four steals, while Mintz dished out a team-high five asists and pulled down three rebounds. Junior forward Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points on 5-8 shooting.
Once again, Pitt Johnstown got the job done with terrific shooting. Pitt Johnstown ended the night shooting 53.5% (23-43) from the field, 50.0% (6-12) from three-point range and 73.7% (14-19) fromt he free-throw line. The Mountain Cat defense held Clarion to just 23-63 (36.5%) shooting, including 3-14 (21.4%) from behind the three-point line.
Damon Gross' 12 points and 10 rebounds led the way for Clarion, while Shameel Carty and Josh Yanke each scored 11 points for the Golden Eagles, who dropped to 0-2.
In Saturday's first game, Ben Howlett's 19 points led seven West Liberty State Hilltoppers who scored in double-figures in a 136-45 win over Eastern University.

The Mountain Cats travel to West Virginia State University for a non-conference game on Tuesday, before opening their first ever WVIAC conference schedule against Ohio Valley (WV) University on Monday, November 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
