Men's Basketball Earns 70-66 win at Seton Hill

11/28/2007

Senior forward Chris Gilliam (Baltimore, MD) scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Mountain Cat men's basketball team to a 70-66 win at WVIAC rival Seton Hill University, Wednesday night. Pitt Johnstown improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Mountain Cats took a slim, 30-29 halftime lead after trailing 17-10 at the 11:03 mark. Pitt Johnstown never gave up that lead and built a 57-49 lead of its own with 4:12 to play, before holding on for the four-point win. Free-throw shooting proved to be the difference, as Pitt Johnstown connected on 23-26 (88.5%), including 10-10 in the first half, from the free-throw line. The Griffins made just six of their 14 free-throw attempts.
Gilliam's 28 points on his 10-16 shooting from the field and 8-8 from the free-throw line led four Mountain Cats who scored in double figures. Junior guard Quinton Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored 14 points, while Greater Johnstown High School graduates Marcus Tullis (Johnstown, Pa.) and William Sharpe (Johnstown, Pa.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points apiece. Tullis also pulled down nine rebounds to match Gilliam for game-high.
With his 28 points, Gilliam now has 1,234 career points. He is four points shy of tying Mike Gresik (1981-85) for seventh place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List.
Pitt Johnstown ended the game shooting 46.8% (22-47) from the field and 30.0% (3-10) from behind the three-point line. Seton Hill shot 26-64 (40.6%) from the field and 8-25 (32.0%) from three-point range.
Alex Tomic led Seton Hill with 21 points. Jordan Thomas added 14 points, and Cody Boone tallied 13 points and seven rebounds for the Griffins, who dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats will host a non-conference game against California University (PA) on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Center, before traveling to Bloomsburg University for another non-conference game on Wednesday.
