Mountain Cats Close Kick-Off Classic With 2-1 Loss to Chestnut Hill

09/05/2010

Kevin Kearney's (Wexford, Pa.) goal late in the first half pulled the Mountain Cat soccer team to within one, but Pitt-Johnstown was not able to knot the score and suffered a 2-1 setback to Chestnut Hill College in Sunday's final round of the 2010 Pitt-Johnstown Kick-Off Classic. The Mountain Cats are now 1-1-0.
Chestnut Hill climbed out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Gavin Reid in the 29th minute and Ryan Lannutti five minutes later, before Kearney answered with his first of the season for Pitt-Johnstown in the 42nd minute. Marc Bucci (Pittsburgh, Pa.) sent a pass into the box and Kearney blasted one by Chestnut Hill goalpeeper Mike Goldstein to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Neither team was able to score in the second half, and the Griffins held on for the victory and evened their record at 1-1-0.
Nolan Levine (McDonald, Pa.) took the loss in goal for Pitt-Johnstown after facing 18 Chestnut Hill shots and making six saves. Levine gave up both goals and slipped to 1-1-0. Goldstein earned the victory for the Griffins and is now 1-1-0. Goldstein allowed just one goal on 17 shots. Goldstein also made two saves.
In Sunday's other game, West Virginia Wesleyan College and the University of the District of Columbia battled to a 2-2- tie. The Bobcats built a 2-0 lead early in the second half, but U.D.C. battled back to tie it on a pair of Mario Banegas goals in the 52nd and 61st minutes. The final 30 minutes in regulation and two 10 minutes overtimes went scoreless, forcing the 2-2 tie.
The Mountain Cats travel to Davis & Elkins's (WV) College to open the WVIAC schedule on Saturday, before hosting conference rival Ohio Valley (WV) University on September 14 at 2 p.m. at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.
