Mountain Cat Soccer Defeats Columbia Union, 3-1

09/03/2007

The Mountain Cat men's soccer team made it two straight wins to start the season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Columbia Union (MD) College in Sunday's final round of the 2007 Pitt-Johnstown Kick-Off Classic. Junior forward Arik Misler (Johnstown, Pa.) netted a pair of goals to lead Pitt Johnstown.
The Mountain Cats opened the scoring with Misler's breakaway goal of off junior midfielder Ben Sera's (North Huntingdon, Pa.) lead pass in the 32nd minute. However, the Pioneers tied the match eight minutes later on Nathaniel Oyefeso goal from a give-and-go with teammate Se-Eun Park.
The score stayed tied, 1-1, until senior forward Chris Hawkins (Scottdale, Pa.) scored the game-winner in the 64th minute. Hawkins took a rebound off of Columbia Union goalkeeper Francis Tucker and found the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the year. The Mountain Cats made it 3-1 and iced the match in the 83rd minute on Misler's second goal of the day, a chip over Tucker's outstretched hands from the left side of the box.
Pitt Johnstown sophomore goalkeeper Craig Neff (Elizabethtown, Pa.) improved to 2-0-0 on the season after giving up just one goal. Neff faced 11 shots and made four saves.
With the loss, the Pioneers dropped to 2-1-0.
The Mountain Cats travel to Geneva College on Thursday at 7:00 p.m., before returning home to open the 2007 WVIAC conference schedule against Shepherd (WV) University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
