Mountain Cats Open WVIAC Soccer Schedule With Win Over Shepherd

Head Coach Eric Kinsey's Mountain Cat soccer team, ranked #10 in the region, made its WVIAC debut a good one with an impressive 3-1 home win over region #6 Shepherd (WV) University, Sunday afternoon. Three Mountain Cats scored goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Craig Neff (Elizabethtown, Pa.) made four saves in the victory. Pitt Johnstown is 3-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the WVIAC.
Pitt Johnstown's Chris Hawkins (Scottdale, Pa.) opened the scoring with a chip over Rams's goalkeeper Wagner Dacosta in 18th minute, before Arik Misler (Johnstown, Pa.) increased the lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute when he scored off of an assist from Vince Spillane's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) free kick.
The Mountain Cats held the two gaol advantage until Shepherd's Duncan Williams cut the lead to 2-1 four minutes into the second half. However, that was a s close as the Rams would get. Junior forward Jason Swope (Indiana, Pa.) sealed the match and gave Pitt Johnstown the 3-1 win when he took Spillane's second assist of the day and scored from just inside the box in the 53rd minute.
Neff remained undefeated and improved to 3-0-0 (1-0-0 WVIAC) after facing 16 shots and making four saves. Dacosta gave up three goals, made three saves and faced 15 shots, but suffered the loss and dropped to 2-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats will play consecutive non-conference matches when they host Waynesburg College on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and travel to La Roche College on Monday, September 17.
