Men's Soccer Clinches Spot in WVIAC Tournament, Despite 2-1 Loss at Shepherd

10/27/2010

Shepherd (WV) University built a 2-0 lead early in the second half and went on to hand the Mountain Cat soccer team a 2-1 road loss on Wednesday. Despite the loss, Pitt-Johnstown, 7-8 overall and 4-5 in the WVIAC, clinched the sixth and final spot for next week's WVIAC Tournament. Zeke Buchta (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) notched the Mountain Cats' lone goal.
Pitt-Johnstown will travel to the winner of the West Virginia Wesleyan College-Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University match to open the WVIAC Tournament on Tuesday.
Shane Lowry took David Medina's cross and beat Mountain Cat goalkeeper Nolan Levine (McDonald, Pa.) to give the Rams a 1-0 lead 24 minutes into the match.
Shepherd held that lead until the 59th minute when Kevin Doyle found the back of the net to increase the lead to 2-0.
The Mountain Cats got on the scoreboard six minutes later on Buchta's goal off of a free-kick. However, that was as close at Pitt-Johnstown would get.
Levine faced 22 Shepherd shots, made nine saves, but surrendered both goals and suffered the loss. Pitt-Johnstown managed just seven shots on Rams goalkeeper Edgar Lopez Zuniga. Zuniga made four saves and gave up one goal to earn the win.
With the win, Shepherd locked-up the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the WVIAC Tournament. The Rams improved to 11-5 overall and 7-2 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats finish the regular season with a make-up game at Washington Adventist (MD) University on Thursday.
