Men's Soccer Suffers 2-1 Loss to Wheeling Jesuit on Senior Day

10/21/2008

The Mountain Cat men's soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Tuesday's Senior Day at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field, but the Cardinals battled back with a pair of goals to defeat Pitt-Johnstown 2-1. The Mountain Cats are now 8-8-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the WVIAC.
Pitt-Johnstown opened the scoring in the 12th minute with an own goal when Shane Hejmanowski's (Dillsburg, Pa.) cross bounced off of a defender's leg and into the net. However, Wheeling Jesuit evened the match three minutes later on Gary Newson's finish off of Andrew Hickey's long ball assist. The Cardinals then took a 2-1 halftime lead on what turned out to be the match-winner when Justin Clark's blast bounced through Mountain Cat goalkeeper Craig Neff (Elizabethtown, Pa.) in the 42nd minute.
Neff faced 23 Cardinals' shots and made eight saves, but took the loss and slipped to 8-8-1 on the season. Wheeling Jesuit goalkeeper Elliot Smith saw just six Mountain Cat shots. Smith gave up the one goal and didn't make a save to earn the victory.
With the win, Wheeling Jesuit improved to 6-9-1 overall and 4-4-0 in conference play.
At halftime, Pitt-Johnstown recognized this year's seniors...Phil Belcastro (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Shane Hejmanoswki (Dillsburg, Pa.), Arik Misler (Johnstown, Pa.), Ben Sera (North Huntingdon, Pa.), Vince Spillane (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Jason Swope (Indiana, Pa.).
Pitt-Johnstown finishes the 2008 regular season on the road with non-conference matches at Goldey-Beacom (DE) College on Saturday and California University (PA) on Wednesday, October 29.
