Mountain Cats Hold on For 4-3 Win Over WAU In Kick-Off Classic

09/07/2009

Freshman Derik Swope (Harleysville, Pa.) scored two second half goals to break a 2-2- tie and lead the Mountain Cat men's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over Washington (D.C.) Adventist University in Monday's final round of the Pitt-Johnstown Kick-Off Classic. With the victory, the Mountain Cats evened their record at 2-2-0.
Pitt-Johnstown took a 1-0 on Jeremy Jones' (Delta, Pa.) tap-in off of assists from Andy Griffin (Dillsburg, Pa.) and Marc Bucci (Pittsburgh, Pa.) nine minutes into the match. Washington Adventist answered with back-to-back goals from Se-Eun Park in the 20th and 35th minutes, before Pitt-Johnstown tied the match 2-2 just before halftime when Kevin Kearney (Wexford, Pa.) finished Swope's through ball in the 44th minute.
Swope put the Mountain Cats up for good with goals in the 53rd and 71st minute. Washington Adventist cut the lead to 4-3 on a unassisted goal from Koume Kreme four minutes later, but that was as close as it would get.
Craig Neff (Elizabethtown, Pa.) improved to 2-2-0 after facing 16 shots and making eight saves. Jonathan Uribe took the loss for Washington Adventist, which fell to 2-3-0. Uribe saw 29 Pitt-Johnstown shots and made 15 saves.
The Mountain Cats will host Westminster College on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field, before traveling to Lake Erie (OH) College on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
