Men's Soccer Advances to WVIAC Semis With Shootout Win at Alderson-Broaddus

10/30/2007

It took two overtime periods and 10 rounds of penalty shootout shots, but the #5-seeded Mountain Cat men's soccer team advanced to the WVIAC Semifinals with an 8-7 win at #4-seeded Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College, Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore goalkeeper Craig Neff (Elizabethtown, Pa.) made five saves in regulation and three saves in the shootout to help Pitt Johnstown secure a spot in the semifinals at Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Thursday.
Neither the Mountain Cats nor the Battlers could find the back of the net through 90 minutes of regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtimes. However, the teams combined for 15 goals in 10 rounds of the shootout. Head Coach Eric Kinsey got goals from Chris Hawkins (Scottdale, Pa.) and Jeff Linnebach (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) to start the shootout, before Neff came out of the net and scored a goal of his own.
The shootout continued with goals from Vince Spillane (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Ben Sera (North Huntingdon, Pa.), Kyle Kiralfy (Lancaster, Pa.) and Nik Buchta (Mount Pleasant, Pa.).
Then, with the shootout tied 7-7, Mountain Cat sophomore forward Cory Winwood (Harwick, Pa.) tallied what would be the match-winning goal in the 10th round. Neff followed with the save of the match that propelled the Mountain Cats into the next round.
Despite being outshot 14-13 prior to the shootout, Pitt Johnstown, 10-6-3 on the season, held a 7-5 advantage in shots on-goal.
With the loss, Alderson-Broaddus' season ended with a 7-10-2 overall record.
