No. 3 Wrestlers Post 2-2 Record at East Coast Duals

01/23/2010

The Mountain Cats bounced back after a loss to start the match to win eight of the next nine bouts in a 26-6 victory over East Region No. 7 Limestone (S.C.) College to open Saturday's action. Limestone jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Matthew Hall got a third period takedown and riding time to upset East Region No. 2 Ryan Link (Cresson, Pa.) at 125 lbs., but NCAA No. 1 Shane Valko (133 lbs.) (Windber, Pa.) quickly gave Pitt-Johnstown 5-3 a advantage. With the help of a riding time point, Valko earned a 22-5 technical fall (7:00) over East Region No. 6 Mike Magaha and the Mountain Cats were off and running. Pitt-Johnstown won the next five matches by decision. Adam Whetstone (Claysburg, Pa.) got an overtime takedown to defeat NCAA No. 5 Jeremy Parker, 4-2, and Ryan McIntyre (Claysburg, Pa.) won a 2-0 decision over Theran Goodale at 149 lbs. Zach Lundgren (157 lbs.) (DuBois, Pa.) followed with a 9-3 win over East Region No. 5 Mikel Bush to make it 14-3, and NCAA No. 3 Kyle Keane (Bradford, Pa.) held off East Region No. 6 Bryce Sopko, 6-3 at 165 lbs. The Mountain Cats made it six straight wins and increased to lead to 20-3 after Steve Makin (174 lbs.) (Portage, Pa.) used three third period back points in a 5-2 win over Casey Bradley. Limestone stopped the streak at 184 lbs. and cut the deficit to 20-6, but with just a pair of matches remaining, it was too late. East Region No. 4 Landon Hall's takedown in the second sudden victory overtime gave him a 4-2 upset win over NCAA No. 8 Patrick Walsh (Leesport, Pa.). However, East Region No. 3 A.J. Brentzel (Irwin, Pa.) scored a 6-4 overtime decision over Mike Walsh at 197 lbs. to push the lead to 23-6, before East Region No. 5 Chris Dempsey (Sewickley, Pa.) closed out the match with a 4-2 decision over Tarek Alaruri at heavyweight.
