Volleyball Drops WVIAC Opener at Home to Wheeling Jesuit

Junior middle hitter Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) had 11 kills and four block assists, but it wasn't enough, as Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University dealt the Lady Cat volleyball team a 3-games-to-1 loss in the 2008 WVIAC opener, Tuesday night in the Sports Center. With the loss, head coach Linda Renzi's Lady Cats slipped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
After winning the opening game 25-22, Pitt-Johnstown lost the next three 15-25, 16-25 and 16-25.
Along with Irwin's 11 kills and four block assists, junior outside hitter Nicole Houser (Penn Run, Pa.) added eight kills, and senior outside hitter Kayla Lape (Fishertown, Pa.) chipped in five block assists. Coach Renzi also got 22 assists from senior setter Merissa Larrew (Irwin, Pa.) and 14 digs from senior setter Katie Shadron (Ligonier, Pa.) in the loss.
With the victory, Wheeling Jesuit improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the WVIAC.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to the Davis & Elkins (WV) College Tournament to take on Central State (OH) University and Lincoln University on Friday and the University of the District of Columbia and Tiffin (OH) University on Saturday. The Lady Cats will then play a conference match against Davis & Elkins on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., before hosting conference foe West Liberty Stte (WV) College on Wednesday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
