Pitt-Johnstown senior guard Lindsay Cale (Hummelstown, Pa.) has been named 2008-09 First-Team All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) by the league's women's basketball coaches to lead a group of four Lady Cats who have earned spots on all-conference teams. Sophomore guard Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) was a second-team choice, while Monae Baker (Bushkill, Pa.) and Jamie Gennett (Davidsville, Pa.) were named to the WVIAC All-Freshman Team... (Full WVIAC Release)
West Liberty State (WV) College's Tori Hansen was tabbed the WVIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year by the coaches, while Ohio Valley (WV) University's Brittany Taylor was named the WVIAC Freshman of the Year. Third-year Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College Head Coach Josh Allen was chosen as the WVIAC Coach of the Year by his peers.
Cale, the first Lady Cats to garner first-team honors since Pitt-Johnstown became a member of the WVIAC in 2006-07, has also been nominated for the Daktronics All-Region Team. Cale leads the Lady Cats in scoring (15.8 ppg.), three-point field goals, assists and free-throw percentage. Her 91.6% from the free-throw line ranks eighth in NCAA Division II. She currently stands in 23rd place on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Scoring List with 1,103 points. Cale also set the Lady Cat single-game scoring mark with 44 points against Salem International (WV) University on February 23.
Aden was named to the All-WVIAC Second-Team after averaging 14.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. Aden also ranks 34th in the country in field goal percentage.
Baker and Gennett earned spots on the 2008-09 WVIAC All-Freshman Team. Baker is averaging 10.3 points per game and a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game, while Gennett stepped into the starting point guard position for Head Coach Sasha Palmer and is averaging 6.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.
The nine-player All-WVIAC first team does not include multiple players from the same squad for the first time since 1992. Van Horn and Mingo are the only repeat selections from last season's first team. Van Horn, the 2008
WVIAC Player of the Year, is a three-time All-WVIAC first team pick.
Pitt Johnstown and Seton Hill were recognized with their programs' initial All-WVIAC first team selections as Cale and Katie Lintner (SHU) each move up from the 2007-08 all-conference second team. Williams, Amber Showalter (Concord), Ashley Vavrek (Fairmont State), and Katie Warehime (Shepherd) complete the all-conference top squad.
