Cambria Wierman had 14 kills for Pitt-Johnstown, but Shippensburg University won the final three sets after dropping the first to deal the Lady Cats a 15-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22 PSAC loss, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown fell to 11-10 overall, and 7-8 in the PSAC.
Two straight kills by
Delaney Roman and a Shippensburg attack error put the Lady Cats in front 11-4 to start the opening set. Shippensburg narrowed it to 12-8 on a Laura Plank service ace but Pitt-Johnstown quickly pushed the lead out to 17-10 on another Red Raider attack error, before going on to the 25-15 win.
In the second set, Shippensburg climbed out to a 5-1 lead on Annie Goerl's kill and went on to even the match with a 25-18 win. After falling behind, Roman's kill cut it to 8-6 but Shippensburg regained control and built the lead to 20-14 and never looked back.
Shippensburg used a 7-4 run to erase a one point deficit and take the third set 25-23. After Pitt-Johnstown took a 19-18 lead, Shippensburg scored the next five to go up by four. Two straight Wierman kills got Pitt-Johnstown to within one at 24-23 but attack error by the Lady Cats gave Shippensburg the win.
Pitt-Johnstown started the fourth set slow, but caught up to Shippensburg with a kill by Wierman, to put the Lady Cats up 6-5. The Lady Cats then extended it to 22-17, but Shippensburg used an 8-0 run to close out the set and secure the victory with a 25-22 win.
Along with Wierman, Roman collected 13 kills and 15 digs, while
Kendall Mahony added 10 kills.
Devan Orr gathered 41 digs, and
Brittany Saetre added 13 digs.
Nikki Oakes had a match-high 43 assists and 17 digs in the loss for the Lady Cats.
Goerl gathered 15 kills for the Red Raiders, who improved to 11-13 overall, and 05-10 in the PSAC.
Pitt-Johnstown begins a stretch of three straight road matches with a non-conference-match at Point Park University on Tuesday. The Lady Cats will return home to the Sports Center on October 28 to host a PSAC match against Lock Haven University.
