After dropping the first set, the Lady Cats bounced back with three consecutive wins to deal West Chester University at three-sets-to-one loss and hold onto first place in the PSAC East on Senior Day, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center.
Cambria Wierman had 18 kills for Pitt-Johnstown, which extended its winning streak to six consecutive matches and improved to 17-11 overall and 12-8 in the PSAC.
Prior to the match, the Lady Cat volleyball program recognized this year's seniors,
Nikki Oakes and
Kelsey Shanabrook.
Delaney Roman gave the Lady Cats an early 9-5 advantage to open the first set. West Chester clawed back to tie at 17 with an Annalee Halbert kill before going in front 23-21 on a Pitt-Johnstown attack error.
Gabriell Carney's kill evened it at 23 for Pitt-Johnstown but the Golden Rams scored three the next four to seal a 26-24 win.
Just like the first set the Lady Cats jumped out to an early lead. This time, Pitt-Johnstown never let West Chester get back in it. Wierman's kill made it 9-3 and a West Chester attack error extended it 12-6. The Lady Cats kept the pressure on and built it to 21-12 on
Madeline George's kill before coasting to the 25-15 win.
Five straight points to open the third set, capped by a Roman service ace, helped the Lady Cats climb out to a 9-2 lead. West Chester outscored the Lady Cats 10-4 to cut it to one before the Golden Rams tied it at 15 on a Lady Cat attack error. Carney's kill gave the lead right back to the Lady Cats and Pitt-Johnstown never gave up the lead enroot to a 25-19 win.
West Chester erased an early five point deficit and kept it close the rest of the way. However, with the score tied 26-26, Pitt-Johnstown was able to score the final two points to secure the 28-26 fourth set win for a match victory.
Along with Wierman's kills, Roman added 15 kills, 15 digs and two service aces, while
Kendall Mahony added 11 kills. George collected eight kills and four digs, and Oakes had 29 assists and 15 digs.
Nicole Curran added 19 assists and five digs,
Devan Orr got 21 digs.
Karleigh Lutz, Cara Reese, and Julia O'Brien had ten kills apiece to lead West Chester, which dropped to 18-13 overall and 8-12 in the PSAC.
The Lady Cats will finish the regular season with a non-conference match at Shepherd (WV) on Tuesday, and PSAC matches at Shippensburg and Millersville next weekend, before opening the 2014 PSAC Conference Tournament on November 11.
