Kendall Mahony collected a match-high 15 kills, a block solo and four block assists, but Kutztown University used a 20-18 win in the fifth set to defeat the Lady Cats, 3-sets-to-2, in Friday's 2014 home-opener in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC.
Kutztown defeated Pitt-Johnstown, 25-19, 7-25, 25-22, 20-25, 20-18.
The Lady Cats opened with the first five points of the match.
Delaney Roman's service ace started it, before a bad set by Kutztown's Anna Conte gave Pitt-Johnstown a 5-0 lead. However, the Golden Bears outscored the Lady Cats 25-14 the rest of the way to take the first set, 25-19.
Just like the first set, Pitt-Johnstown raced out to a big lead in the second set. However, this time, the Lady Cats didn't let Kutztown back in it.
Cambria Wierman's kill gave Pitt-Johnstown a 9-1, and a block from Mahony and
Gabriell Carney built it to 20-5, before the Lady Cats cruised to a 25-7 win.
The Golden Bears answered with a 25-22 win in the third set. Kutztown opened-up a 20-17 lead. Pitt-Johnstown scored the next four to regain the lead 21-10 on Carney's service ace, but the Golden Bears went scored five of the next six to take the set.
Trailing 2-sets-to-1, Pitt-Johnstown outscored Kutztown 11-6 to break a 14-14 tie and force a fifth and deciding set.
In the deciding set, Pitt-Johnstown erased a 13-10 deficit to go up 14-13 on an attack error by Audrey Stringer, but Kutztown was able to stave off elimination and hold on for the 20-18 win.
Along with Mahony, Roman had 10 kills and 15 digs, while Wireman added nine kills and nine digs. The Lady Cats also got seven kills apiece from
Madeline George and Carney.
Nikki Oakes (27 assists) and
Nicole Curran (23 assists) combined for 50 set assists, and
Devan Orr finished with a match-high 31 digs for Pitt-Johnstown.
Danielle Van Buren had 13 kills to lead Kutztown, which improved to 6-5 overall and 1-4 in the PSAC.
Pitt-Johnstown hosts East Stroudsburg University for another Homecoming Weekend match on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Sports Center, before traveling to Lock Haven University for a PSAC match on Tuesday.
