IUP Sweeps Softball in PSAC West Doubleheader

2757Rachel Hoffman hit a solo homerun for Pitt-Johnstown, but Indiana University (PA) dealt the Mountain Cats 7-3 and 12-4 PSAC West losses, Friday evening in Indiana.  With the losses, Pitt-Johnstown dropped to 5-27 overall and 5-19 in conference-play.
 
In game one, Pitt-Johnstown build an early 2-0 lead, but IUP clawed back with three runs in the second and went on to the 7-3 win.
 
Montana Mang's two out double to the right center field gap drove home Stephanie Seibert from second to give Pitt-Johnstown a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, before Rachel Hoffman belted a solo homer in the second to make it 2-0.
 
IUP answered with three runs in the second inning and one in the third to go in front 4-2.
 
The Crimson Hawks added another insurance run in the fifth, and two more in the sixth on Bryanna Lonick's two-run single in the sixth.  The Mountain Cats scratched out a run in their half of the seventh on Seibert's two-out double, but it wasn't enough.
 
Hoffman went 2-for-3 with a homer, while Seibert singled, doubled and drove in one.  Mang had a hit and an RBI, while Marley Elbin collected a base hit for Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Hoffman suffered the loss in the circle for the Mountain Cats after allowing seven runs (6 earned) on 11 hits.  Hoffman also fanned two and didn't allow a walk.
 
In the nightcap, the Crimson Hawks ran out to a 5-1 lead after two innings and went on to complete the sweep with the 12-4 win.
 
Mang's first inning single drove home Elbin to put Pitt-Johnstown on top 1-0, but IUP responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame and three more in the second to take a 5-1 lead.
 
Pitt-Johnstown got a two-run double from Taylor Hoover and an RBI single from Mang to narrow the gap to 7-4 in the sixth, but IUP added five runs in its next at-bat, including Rachel Francis' solo homerun, to end the game in six innings with the 12-4 win.
 
Mang was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, and Hoover added a two-run double for Pitt-Johnstown.  Elbin had two hits and scored two runs, and Seibert chipped-in one hit and a run scored.
 
Melissa Wagner fell to 2-14 after surrendering 12 runs (8 earned) on 15 Crimson Hawks' hits.
 
With the sweep, IUP improved to 14-18 overall and 12-10 in the PSAC West.
 
Pitt-Johnstown travels to PSAC Western Division doubleheaders at Mercyhurst on Saturday and Gannon on Sunday, before closing out the 2015 season with two conference games against the Golden Knights on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Indiana University (PA).
