Wrestlers Fall to #2 St. Cloud State in Nat'l Duals Semifinals

3268Pitt-Johnstown's quest for a NWCA Division II National Duals championship came to an end Saturday afternoon, as the No. 7 Mountain Cats fell 30-7 to No. 2 St. Cloud State in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Travis McKillop, who is ranked second in the nation at 184 pounds, and Jacob Hart posted the only victories for Pitt-Johnstown, which had routed No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney on Friday.

Evan Link, who is ranked eighth in Division II, dropped a tough match to No. 1 Tim Prescott at 125 pounds. Prescott, the defending national champion, claimed a 2-1 victory thanks to a penalty point after Link was called for a full Nelson.

The big shock came at 133 pounds, as Nick Roberts, fresh off his victory over two-time national champion Daniel DeShazer of Nebraska-Kearney, was pinned by Jarred Oftedahl. Roberts led 1-0 in the third period when Oftedahl caught him and recorded a defensive fall for a 9-0 Huskies lead.

Matt Nelson scored a 10-1 major decision over Pitt-Johnstown's Sam Hanau at 141 pounds and Jay Hildreth broke open tie match in the third to beat Travis Shaffer 9-2 at 149 pounds to make it 16-0.

St. Cloud State also finished strong in the next two weights, as Larry Bomstad beat Devin Austin 6-2 at 157 and top-ranked Clint Poster edged Tyler Reinhart, 4-2, at 165.

Pitt-Johnstown's John Blankenship gave up a stalling point and an escape in the third period as Clayton Jennissen came away with a 2-1 victory that extended St. Cloud State's lead to 25-0.

McKillop got the Mountain Cats on the board at 184, as he rallied from an early deficit and piled on the points in an 11-3 major-decision victory over Uthman Rabiu.

Jacob Hart also rallied for a victory at 197 pounds, as he beat V.J. Giulio 6-4 in sudden victory.

St. Cloud State's third top-ranked wrestler, Austin Goergen, closed out the victory with a technical fall over No. 3 D.J. Sims a 285 pounds.
