The Lady Cat women's volleyball team had upset on their minds when they visited fifth-ranked and defending NCAA Division II National Champion Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University for a non-conference match Tuesday night.Â
Maura Brehl had 18 kills and
Cambria Wierman added 16 kills to help Pitt-Johnstown forced a fifth set, but suffered a 15-6 setback in the finale. Pitt-Johnstown, which had its eight-match win streak snapped, is now 15-6 on the year.

After the Lady Cats took the opener, Wheeling Jesuit came back with 25-22 and 25-14 wins. Pitt-Johnstown avoided elimination with a 25-22 win in the fourth set, but the Cardinals were able to secure the victory with the 15-6 fifth-set win.

In the final set, Wheeling Jesuit took control with an 8-1 run that broke a 2-2 tie and closed out the Lady Cats on Lauran Graves' kill.

Pitt-Johnstown started fast and took the opening set 25-23. Haley Kendall's kills gave the Cardinals an early 8-5 lead. The Lady Cats tied it at 10 on kills from
Anna Johns and
Marissa Erminio, then went in front 21-19 on a pair of Wheeling Jesuit errors and a block from Johns and Erminio. Pitt-Johnstown never gave up the lead and ended it with another kills from Erminio.

The Cardinals came back with 25-22 and 25-14 wins in the second and third sets. Three straight Pitt-Johnstown errors in the third set gave Wheeling Jesuit a 13-6 advantage, but the Lady Cats came back to narrow it to 19-17 on a combined block from Brehl and Johns. However, Emma Schleucher's kill finished the set and gave the Cardinals the three-point win.

Pitt-Johnstown ran out to a 9-4 lead in the fourth set, but Wheeling Jesuit stormed back. The Cardinals rallied to knot it at 10, then went on to outscore the Lady Cats 15-4 the rest of the way. Breanna Kramer and Katie Campbell's kills made it 18-11, before an ace from Graves closed out the 14-14 win.

With their backs to the wall, Pitt-Johnstown was able to take the fourth set 25-22. Two Wierman kills gave the Lady Cats a 6-1 lead to start. Wheeling Jesuit answered to tie it at 13 on a Graves' kills, but Pitt-Johnstown scored the final three points break a 22-22 tie and force the fifth set on Wierman's kills and Brehl's block.

Brehl had a match-high 18 kills, five blocks, five digs, and three aces, while Wierman collected 16 kills, one block, and nine digs for Pitt-Johnstown. Erminio added a dozen kills, and
Kendall Mahony had five kills, a pair of blocks, and an ace.

The Lady Cats also got 36 set assists and 13 digs from
Allison Mondorff, seven assists and 14 digs from
Devan Orr, and nine assists and four digs from
Jessica Dillon.

Kindall's 17 kills led the way for Wheeling Jesuit, which extended its winning streak to 17 consecutive matches and improved to 23-2 on the season. The Cardinals also got 15 kills and eight digs from Kramer, and 11 kills and three blocks from Graves in the five-set victory.

Pitt-Johnstown will play its next four PSAC matches on the road beginning at Shippensburg on Friday and at Millersville on Saturday. The Lady Cats will play their next home matches in the Sports Center on November 4 and 5 against Indiana (PA) and Clarion.
