Softball Drops PSAC Central Doubleheader at IUP, 4-1, 8-1

3402Morgan Cannin had three hits, and Marley Elbin and Montana Mang each had two hits, but Indiana (PA) swept a PSAC Central Division doubleheader from the Pitt-Johnstown softball team, 4-1 and 8-1, Wednesday afternoon in Indiana.  Pitt-Johnstown fell to 6-17 overall and 3-7 in conference-play.
 
In game one, IUP broke a scoreless game with a run in the fifth inning, before adding three more in the sixth on its way to the 4-1 victory.
 
Amy Fairman's RBI single in the Crimson Hawks' fifth inning opened the scoring.  Megan Gould's RBI fielder's choice in the sixth increased it to 2-0, and Amanda Parrish followed two batters with a two-run double to left field that increased it to 4-0.
 
Pitt-Johnstown scored its lone run in the top of the seventh.  Amber Maurer and  Cannin started the inning with back-to-back singles.  Maurer came around to score on Elbin's base hit to right field, but IUP pitcher Lauren Zola was able to work out of the jam to preserve the 4-1 win.
 
Cannin went 2-for-4, and Elbin added an RBI base hit for Pitt-Johnstown.  Mang, Taylor Hoover, McKenna Kern, Kelsey Feeney, and Maurer each had one hit for Pitt-Johnstown.
 
3404Melissa Wagner took the loss in the circle for Pitt-Johnstown after allowing four earned runs on seven hits in six innings.  Wagner also walked five and struck out seven.
 
Hannah Mercer had three hits, and Parrish chipped-in two hits and a pair of RBI to lead the Crimson Hawks.
 
Zola earned the win in a complete-game effort for IUP.  Zola held Pitt-Johnstown to one run one eight hits.  She fanned seven and allowed just one walk.
 
In the nightcap, IUP sent nine hitters to the plate and scored four runs on six hits in the bottom of the first off of Pitt-Johnstown starter Emily Moore and went on to complete the sweep with the 8-1 win.
 
Pitt-Johnstown answered with a run in the fourth.  Elbin led off with a double and scored on Mang's single up the middle.
 
However, the Crimson Hawks came right back and scored two more in the bottom of the inning on Mercer's run-producing triple and Gould's RBI single.
 
3410IUP added two more in the fifth and coasted to the 8-1 victory.
 
Pitt-Johnstown had three hits, singles from Cannin and Mang, and a double from Elbin.
 
Moore suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs on 17 IUP hits.
 
Taylor Mercurio finished with three hits and two RBI, and Parrish collected three more hits for the Crimson Hawks.
 
Megan Rissinger earned the win for IUP.  Rissinger pitched the first four innings and gave up one run on two hits.  Brooke Darling pitched the final three innings and didn't allow a run for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 18-12 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC Central.
 


Pitt-Johnstown's non-conference doubleheader against Edinboro on Sunday has been cancelled due to weather.  Pitt-Johnstown will host a PSAC Central doubleheaders against Lock Haven on Friday, April 15 at 2:30 p.m. at Richland Elementary School, before traveling to Clarion on April 16 for another conference doubleheader.
