Pitt-Johnstown freshman Chris Eddins upset No. 5 Matt Nelson at 141 lbs., but top-ranked St. Cloud State (MN) University won eight of the 10 bouts and handed the eighth-ranked Mountain Cats a 37-6 loss in Thursday's Quarterfinals of the 2017 NCAA Division II Wrestling National Duals in Fort Wayne, IN.  The Mountain Cats suffered their first loss of the season and slipped to 7-1.
 
Pitt-Johnstown will wrestle the winner of the No. 6 Mercyhurst/Indianapolis match on Thursday at 5 p.m.
 
St. Cloud State ran out to a 10-0 lead after two bouts.  Top-ranked Brett Velasquez won a 15-7 major decision over Zeke Beatty at 125 lbs., and Mike Rhone pinned Joe Davis at 3:30.
 
Pitt-Johnstown responded with Chris Eddins' upset win over No. 5 Matt Nelson at 141 lbs.  Eddins built a 6-2 lead after two periods, before Nelson came back to tie it at eight with under a minute remaining in regulation.  Neither wrestlers scored after that, but Eddins earned the extra point for riding time and secured a 9-8 victory.
 
However, at 149 lbs., St. Cloud State's James Pleski pinned Boe Bonzo 50 seconds into the second period, and No. 7 Larry Bomstad defeated Steve Edwards, 13-7, at 157 lbs. to increase the Huskies' lead to 19-3.
 
The Mountain Cats answered at 165 lbs.  Second-Ranked Tyler Reinhart used eight third period back points to break a 4-4 tie and down eighth-ranked Gabe Fogarty, 12-5 to narrow the gap to 19-6.
 
That was as close as Pitt-Johnstown would get.  At 174 lbs., St. Cloud State's fifth-ranked Clayton Jennisson held off No. 11 John Blankenship, 3-2, before No. 6 Uthman Rabiu sealed the victory for the Huskies with his 12-10 decision over Levi Niebauer at 184 lbs.
 
With just two bouts left, St. Could State closed out the 37-6 win with fall from No. 3 Vince Dietz at 197 lbs. and No. 1 Austin Goergen at 285 lbs. to improve to 4-0.
